  A reminder from Paul C that he needs to be contacted by 25th November by anyone else who would like to go on the weekend to Dolgellau next October (as per details previously circulated by email).   Sunday 18 th  December 2022 - Gisburn - meal at Worston 4.30 p.m. departure   Northbound to Preston, on to the M65, M65 eastbound to junction 7, via A6185/A678 to the A680, A671 to roundabout N of Whalley, A59 to Gisburn. Park in Gisburn. No morning coffee stop. The coach will leave Gisburn at 4.30 pm to drive to the Calf’s Head for the Christmas meal at 5 pm. Dec 18th 2022    Gisburn Walk and Christmas Meal   See details and Menu below... At the turn off for Mungrisdale, Mike J’s party left the coach heading for the top of Souther Fell. They crossed the ridge and worked their way down to Scales and so to Threlkeld. They had enjoyed a day of relative sunshine on the edge of the Blencathra Fells.(8.5m) Most of the rest of the planned walks started from Mungrisdale village itself. Paul’s group headed up Souther Fell, then crossed Scales Fell and ascended Blencathra -   in cloud. From here they descended to Threlkeld by Blease Fell.(8m) The Oldham party, on a mission to claim some of the Caldbeck summits, headed for High Pike and returned over the Knott and Great Calva and into the Skiddaw House area.(15.5m) Stuart’s group headed in a similar direction: down Swinside and up Great Lingy Hill to the very welcome shelter of the Lingy Hut. Photo by Anne The weather was miserable for most of the day, with heavy rain and strong winds on the tops. In spite of that, 45 walkers braved the weather in a record number of 13 separate walks. Groups were dropped off the coach all the way along the Coniston road from Lowick Bridge to Torver and finally in Coniston itself. Stuart’s and Ian’s groups were first off the coach at Lowick Bridge. They set off in the same direction but by different routes heading for the Cumbria Way. Stuart’s group soon disappeared beyond Kiln Bank and at different times they both passed Beacon Tarn and along the Lakeside Path Next to leave was Mike B’s group who tortuously reached the Cumbria Way and then ascended Beacon Fell before following along the shore path.   Alan Williams will be giving his last slideshow for the Southport Fellwalking Club after the AGM on 26 th October. Instead of the usual expeditions to faraway places this slideshow will focus on the European Alps, and will include suggestions for 4,000m peaks that would definitely be attainable for many of our fellwalkers. Glenridding Stu and Ele's party was the first off near Pooley Bridge. They followed footpaths to Waterfoot and little Meldrum, and then climbed to Gowbarrow summit. Very strong winds here followed them to High force and the climb up to spectacular Glencoyne Head amphitheatre path, descending via Bleabank Side to Seldom Seen and the Lakeside path to Glenridding. Next off was Ian and Gerry’s party at Watermillock. They also headed to Gowbarrow but took the lower path via Green Hill to reach Aira Force waterfalls.   Next Walk 9th October 2022 is Glenridding There was definitely an Autumnal chill in the air as groups left the coach near Malham. Stuart had already started his walk from Gargrave to trace the Pennine Way along the River Aire to Janet’s Fosse. At Goredale Scar they decided the water fall was too full to ascend and instead headed up over The Lings to the Tarn. They ascended Comb Hill and Ing Scar and descended by Malham Beck. Mike’s party started at Airton and enjoyed the long slow ascent of The Weets. After a few false starts around Keal Cup Hill they reached the Water Sinks.   From there they descended to Goredale Scar, passing Stuart’s group on their ascent. Helen and Graham also left the coach at Airton and followed the Aire up through Hanlith Bridge and eventually to Janet’s Fosse. Paul C’s party roamed at will from the skinny dippers of Janet’s Foss, up the Goredale Scar Waterfall and over the Malham Tarn plateau to some remote caves on Pikedaw Hill before retur...

REMEMBER - THE NEXT WALK  - SEPTEMBER 25th is to MALHAM Details below   As the coach approached Tal y Cafn to cross the Conway heading for Betws y Coed, the groups started to get ready for their various departures. Still able to walk after completing their mammoth 296 mile walk on the Cambrian Way, the Oldhams were first off the coach at Dolgarrog. They were heading for Llyn Cowlyd   Reservoir from   where they crossed the forested Pen Craig Gron into Crafnant and then made their way down the Swallow Falls and so to Betws. From Trefriw John took his group along the Crafnant valley past the monument to cross over the ‘heavily wooded'  areas of Lyn y Sarnau and down to Betws. At Llanrhychwy, just outside Trefriw, Pat and Steph followed the Fairy Falls   - Lynn Geirionydd forest   paths and slowly descended to the Llugwy and into Betws. Stuart’s group also headed for Llyn Geirionydd but turned for Castell y Gwynt and then on to Rhychwyn to visit...

  The coach sped up the Rylstone/Cracoe valley ready to off drop the groups at their chosen starting points. Stuart was first off the coach at his usual spot – the quaintly named ‘Non- Go-Bye Farm’. He traced his familiar route across Embsay Moor, Embsay Crags, and Embsay and Barden Reservoirs and down to Burnsall on the River Wharfe. They followed the river to their chosen crossing point:   Suspension Bridge or the Stepping Stones ? and then headed up to Hebden. Next off the coach was Mike’s group who followed the Rylestone Fell Ridge with its conspicuous Cross and Obelisk round to Thorpe End. From there the leader led them down the wrong track ! and they were redeemed by Allan who spotted very rough path heading for Burnsall. The path along the river was very busy with walkers just enjoying this beautiful place.
