SHAP to POOLEY BRIDGE 19th June 2022

  The Shap to Pooley Bridge walk is an opportunity for a long linear trek and the groups readily rose to the challenge in varying degrees - from 8 miles to 13 miles – although the Oldhams naturally took the long way round at 17 miles ! They went west to the Hawes Water area and came back from Steel Knotts along the Ullswater. Stuart’s group and Paul’s group visited Keld and Shap Abbey before following the River Lowther up to Bampton. Stuart extended it to Askham. They enjoyed the two suspension bridges and the gate with no wall ! Mike J’s group and Mike B’s group crossed the fields from Shap village and headed for Whale and Helton to cross Askham Common, exploring the numerous stones and antiquities. Pat and Steph started from Hackthorpe to walk through Lowther Castle and then crossed Askham Fell to descend into Pooley Bridge. HAWKSHEAD 6th June 2022

  Walking from Hawkshead for the first time for over twenty years. There were five walk cards on offer – two starting in Windermere and three from Hawkshead itself. Mark again proved his skill at driving in narrow country lanes and left a few motorists in awe at his expertise. The Windermere Ferry did not make life any easier by requiring a Contactless card for the £1.00 toll ! and for our party Huw's charm was required to negotiate with fellow travellers. Mike J took a large group up Latterbarrow and Claife Heights returning to Hawkshead by Moss Eccles Tarn and Wise Een Tarn. Stuart set off on a similar route up Claife Heights and descended to Far Sawrey. They then crossed the valley and returned to Hawkshead by forest paths through Sunnythwaite and the Furness Fells. The Oldhams headed for the highest peaks of the Grizedale Forest area – Top of Selside and Carron Crag returning over Satterthwaite Fells. Mike’s group had already done a tour of the Undermillbeck Common so
