HAWKSHEAD 6th June 2022
Walking from Hawkshead for the first time for over twenty years. There were five walk cards on offer – two starting in Windermere and three
from Hawkshead itself. Mark again proved his skill at driving in narrow country
lanes and left a few motorists in awe at his expertise.
The Windermere
Ferry did not make life any easier by requiring a Contactless card for the
£1.00 toll ! and for our party Huw's charm was required to negotiate with fellow
travellers.
Mike J took a large group up Latterbarrow and Claife Heights returning
to Hawkshead by Moss Eccles Tarn and Wise Een Tarn.
Stuart set off on a similar route up Claife Heights and
descended to Far Sawrey. They then crossed the valley and returned to Hawkshead
by forest paths through Sunnythwaite and the Furness Fells.
The Oldhams headed for the highest peaks of the Grizedale
Forest area – Top of Selside and Carron Crag returning over Satterthwaite
Fells.
Mike’s group had already done a tour of the Undermillbeck
Common south of Windermere before they reached the Ferry. From Sawrey they
headed past Eel House and The Cross and up to Grizedale Tarn .
Pat and Steph enjoyed the crossing and then went north from
Sawrey up Claife Heights and descended by Latterbarrow.
Geoff and Mike ascended Carron Crag and descended to Coniston
and enjoyed a cultured stroll round Brantwood.
Anne and Helen headed for Pull Wyke and Bletham Tarn enjoying
the river at Clappersgate and returned by High Tok How.
All groups spoke of the paths and routes obstructed by fallen
trees from recent storms, but it is a really lovely unspoilt area.
