DUFTON 28th MAY 2023

Image
What a wonderful day’s walking, in a delightful area we have not visited since 2019.                         So - new to some but familiar to others. All four groups departed from Dufton village. The Oldhams sped off in a northerly direction heading for the remote areas of Upper Teesdale: across miles of moorland tracks to Knock Fell, Great Dunn Fell and Cross Fell. Unfortunately, in a slight fall, Claire suffered an injury to her hand – later diagnosed as a broken finger. But it didn’t hold them back and neither did rescuing a sheep from a wire fence unduly delay them. Stuart’s group headed north west to Bluethwaite Hill and followed round to the Threlkeldside Mine area and then over to Great Rundale Pillar and round to the Tarns. Returning via the Pennine Way they arrived at High Cup Nick just in time to greet Steph’s party triumphantly emerging from the Nick. From Brackenthwaite Steph had led her group up the full length of the Gill with the exi

KETTLEWELL to GRASSINGTON 14th May 2023

Image
It was Kettlewell on Sunday and nearly all were off the coach and ready to walk by 10.15. And a beautiful day it turned out to be. Martin’s group left the coach at Conistone heading for a scramble up the Dib and then on to the Dales Way to join Bycliffe ‘Road’. They crossed Grassington Moor to the disused mine workings, along Dukes New Road to Hebden Beck and finally the Dales Way back to Linton Falls and Grassington. The target for Mike J’s group was Conistone Pie, a conspicuous rock formation with great views of Wharfdale and Littondale. They followed the Dales Way and Highgate Leys Lane up to the trig point on the Moor and then descended to Conistone Pie returning along Scot Gate Lane. From Kettlewell Gerry led over the bridges of that picturesque village and up the hillside to Cappelstone Gate. After lunch in the abandoned quarries they descended to the sad Mossdale Scar and down to Kelber and Bare House. Once again Gerry followed a route

GLENRIDDING 1st May 2023

On Sunday there was thick cloud and a bitterly cold wind on the tops of the fells and wisely most leaders adapted their plans accordingly. Mike and Huw’s group was the first to leave the coach – on the top of the Kirkstone Pass. They followed a path beside the road but shortly turned east behind Hartsop Hall and along Brothers Water to Patterdale. Well ahead of time, the group split up with different interests - Gerry and Paul going up to Lanty’s Tarn, and Mike and Brian briefly up Grisedale. Two groups left the coach at Hartsop. Mike J headed for Hayeswater and Rest Dodd. Because of the exposed conditions they avoided Brock Crags and followed the Angletarn Pikes Ridge to descend by Bordale Hause. They re-convened in Side Farm Tea Rooms. Ian also left at Hartsop and led his group up the Hause to the top of Place Fell. They descended by High Dodd and Sleet Fell to the safety of the shores of Ullswater and back to Glenridding without a second thought of Lanty’s Tarn. Starting fro
