GLENRIDDING 1st May 2023

On Sunday there was thick cloud and a bitterly cold wind on the tops of the fells and wisely most leaders adapted their plans accordingly.

Mike and Huw’s group was the first to leave the coach – on the top of the Kirkstone Pass. They followed a path beside the road but shortly turned east behind Hartsop Hall and along Brothers Water to Patterdale. Well ahead of time, the group split up with different interests - Gerry and Paul going up to Lanty’s Tarn, and Mike and Brian briefly up Grisedale.

Two groups left the coach at Hartsop. Mike J headed for Hayeswater and Rest Dodd. Because of the exposed conditions they avoided Brock Crags and followed the Angletarn Pikes Ridge to descend by Bordale Hause. They re-convened in Side Farm Tea Rooms.

Ian also left at Hartsop and led his group up the Hause to the top of Place Fell. They descended by High Dodd and Sleet Fell to the safety of the shores of Ullswater and back to Glenridding without a second thought of Lanty’s Tarn.

Starting from Patterdale, Martin led his group up Boredale to the top of Place Fell – touched the Trig point and staying no longer than necessary returned along the shoreside path.

The Oldhams had a task to do – to accompany Geoff on his mission to ‘Complete the Wainwrights’. They headed up the Hause and over Place Fell – down to Doe Green and then back up the Nab – always a challenge. Geoff completed all the Wainwrights on his 60 Birthday and celebrated it in the traditional way. Well done Geoff!

Pat and Steph followed Grisedale Beck all the way up the valley to the Lodge near Grisedale Tarn and then returned on the opposite bank – a good 8.5 miles.

Steve J headed for Hartsop above How, onto Fairfield and returned by St Sunday Crags. No photos – understandably he was not risking his camera in those conditions. Other walkers heading for Helvellyn had turned back.

Just for a change Ele and Stuart took to the water - on the Ullswater Western Belle Steamer and enjoyed views one would never see from the mountains. They still had time to visit Lanty’s Tarn and return by Miresbeck all without a drop of rain.
