SHAP to POOLEY BRIDGE 19th June 2022

The Shap to Pooley Bridge walk is an opportunity for a long linear trek and the groups readily rose to the challenge in varying degrees - from 8 miles to 13 miles – although the Oldhams naturally took the long way round at 17 miles !

They went west to the Hawes Water area and came back from Steel Knotts along the Ullswater.

Stuart’s group and Paul’s group visited Keld and Shap Abbey before following the River Lowther up to Bampton. Stuart extended it to Askham. They enjoyed the two suspension bridges and the gate with no wall !

Mike J’s group and Mike B’s group crossed the fields from Shap village and headed for Whale and Helton to cross Askham Common, exploring the numerous stones and antiquities.

Pat and Steph started from Hackthorpe to walk through Lowther Castle and then crossed Askham Fell to descend into Pooley Bridge.

Anne and Helen roamed through Askham village and Lowther Castle and enjoyed the views over Ullswater.

Paul set off from Tirril – a small village near Eamont Bridge.

Finally Mike C started from Pooley Bridge ! And went west along the Lake to High Street and then worked his way back along the ridge.

All groups came together and enjoyed the hospitality of Pooley Bridge in glorious sunshine and the fact that the coach did not appear at the expected time was just a minor inconvenience. If it had been raining it might have been different!

It was a great day’s walking.

Mike
