GLENRIDDING 9th October 2022

Alan Williams will be giving his last slideshow for the Southport Fellwalking Club after the AGM on 26th October. Instead of the usual expeditions to faraway places this slideshow will focus on the European Alps, and will include suggestions for 4,000m peaks that would definitely be attainable for many of our fellwalkers.

Glenridding

Stu and Ele's party was the first off near Pooley Bridge. They followed footpaths to Waterfoot and little Meldrum, and then climbed to Gowbarrow summit. Very strong winds here followed them to High force and the climb up to spectacular Glencoyne Head amphitheatre path, descending via Bleabank Side to Seldom Seen and the Lakeside path to Glenridding.

Next off was Ian and Gerry’s party at Watermillock. They also headed to Gowbarrow but took the lower path via Green Hill to reach Aira Force waterfalls. From here they headed up to Dockray to ascend Wattermillock Common. Near Brown Hills the party split, to descend via different routes to Glencoyne Beck and Seldom Seen, taking the lakeside path to Glenridding.

The Oldham’s were next to leave, at Aira Force. Their original ambitious plans were greatly dashed by the very strong winds encountered, and on reaching Hartside Summit they opted to instead head for Sheffield Pike, Glenridding Dodd and return earlier than planned to the comforting Glenridding Hotel for refreshments.

Paul took his party up the steep path to Boredale Hause, then onward to climb to the summit of Place Fell, where it was difficult to stand due to the wind. They then descended via Hart Crag and High Knott to Boredale, turning south to follow the road, then path up to Boredale Hause for the return to Glenridding.

Steph took her group up via Lanty`s Tarn to the “Hole in the Wall '', where the wall itself provided lunchtime shelter from the strong wind. From here they descended to Red Tarn, then returned to detour around Lanty`s Tarn

There were six private walks, some involving changes due to strong winds.

Steve climbed High White Stones then crossed Sticks Pass to reach Raise and Whiteside, before descending to Keppel Cove and the Greenside Route to Glenridding.

Alan and Edwina climbed to the windy summit of Gowbarrow from Park Brow Foot, descending to High Force and Glencoyne Park. From here the road and Lakeside Path took them along the Ullswater Way into Glenridding.

Geoff’s solo walk saw him achieving his goal of two unclaimed Wainwrights, namely Gowbarrow Fell and Arniston Crag. He threw in Place Fell as an add on achievement.

Keith and David climbed to Boredale Hause, contouring round the lovely Angle Tarn to cross Satura Crags with the aim of going to the summit of Rest Dodd. However, strong wind deterred this climb, so they retraced their steps and returned to Glenridding.

Alan and Huw aimed for and conquered the windy summit of Place Fell, dropping via High Knott to the sheltered lakeside path for their return to Glenridding.

Anne and Helen opted for a gentler, sheltered route up Greenside Road to the Youth Hostel by the ruined mines. From there they crossed Glencoyne Beck to follow a very pleasant track down to Mire Side and into Glenridding.

All in all, a very satisfying day on the fells, made even more enjoyable due to the later than 3pm forecast of heavy rain. That rain kindly held back until the coach reached the M6 heading for Southport!
