GLENRIDDING via the KIRKSTONE 1st September 2025
It was a
different walking day.
Accompanied
by members of the Fraser Family, Mark’s ashes were scattered on the slopes of
the Kirkstone Pass. It was a sad yet happy occasion and we were sure Mark would
have appreciated our acknowledgement of his cheerful and professional contribution
to our Club.
And the
walks started from the top of the Pass.
Stuart led
straight up Pike How with the target of six Wainwrights and a total ascent of
3000 feet. They crossed the Threshwaite and Thornthwaite divide, along High
Street, Kidsty Pike and down by Angle Tarn and Boredale Hause. 11 miles and
3000’.
Martin also
led his small group up Raven’s Edge and on to Stonycove Pike to descend steeply
into Haweswater Gill and down to Hartsop and Patterdale. 8m and 1700’.
From the Inn
Mike and Gerry led their group down the Pass (through a group of very black
cows!) across to Sykeside and along the Hartsop – Beckstones path to Glenridding.
8m
Steph and
Pat followed a very similar route tracing Kirkstone Beck – bravely walking
straight through the cattle, heading for Sykeside and so on along the lakeside
path to Glenridding. 8m
From Sykeside
the Oldhams commenced an 11 mile route of more than 4500 feet involving half a
dozen Wainwrights and ending up on Birkhouse Moor. There was the usual vigorous
banter as to which group followed the best route off a very wet Birkhouse Moor.
Also from
Hartsop, Ian led his group in the opposite direction up Boredale Hause and on
to the summit of Place Fell. They descended to the northern end of Deepdale and
then had the task of crossing Boredale Hause again and so down to Glenridding.
2500’ and 9.5m.
Again from
Hartsop Alan’s target was up Deepdale to St Sunday. From there he enjoyed
glorious changing views all day.
Steve headed
in the same direction but onto Dove Crag and along the upper ridges to
Helvellyn and he too found some areas very wet. 12m
And finally
Anne and Helen followed the popular Hartsop path past the beautiful Angle Tarn
Falls to Patterdale and Glenridding.
There was no
rain but some dramatic views and some spectacular cloud effects.
A great
day’s walking.
As always -
thank you to the photographers for all the spectacular pictures. Alan, Anne, Christine,
Claire, Geoff, Ian, Mike C, Mike B, Steve, Pam and Stuart.
