It
was a very pleasant day for walking made all the more enjoyable by the
comparison with the previous and subsequent days of continuous rain.
Steph’s party were the first to leave the coach at Ings, to follow the
Dubbs Road over the ridge to the Troutbeck Valley. They followed the path on
eastern sides of the river up to Hagg Bridge and returned on the western side to
the Old Post Office Tea Rooms and eventually Limefitt Park. 11m
1200’
Alan and Edwina started their walk by going over Orrest Head then
using the Dubbs Road and Garburn Road to Troutbeck. From here followed the
river using both the Ing and Hagg bridges and eventually back to Limefitt Park.
10m 1500’
The Oldhams set off on a mission. Keith wanted to do the Kentmere
Round. It involved crossing the Garburn ridge, down Kentmere Reservoir and up
the Nam Bield Pass and back along High Street and Thornthwaite and down Hagg
Gill. 16 miles and 4000’
Mike and Gerry led their group up the valley to ascend to the Tongue.
They then continued further up the valley to a sheep fold and crossed the Tongue
Beck (with varying degrees of success) and followed the path back over the
ancient bridge and down to Limefitt. 8m
900’
Paul led his group up the Hagg Gill side of the valley to
Threshthwaite Mouth and then on to the Beacon. It was steep up and down but he
had warned them. ! 11m
Geoff and Mike also headed for Thornthwaite Crag – up the Garburn Pass
and along the ridge to Thornthwaite Crag. They descended by Threshthwaite Mouth
and then along the Hagg Gill path. 12m 2900,
Simon did a neat solo ascent of Sour Howes, Sallows, Yoke, Ill Bell
and Froswick, Hagg Gill and the Tongue and still got down with time for a
drink. 3300’
Stuart headed up the Garburn Road and followed almost the same ridge
in reverse and returned by Park Fell. 3700’.
10.8’
All returned in time for a drink and refreshments in the sunshine at
the Haybarn Inn and only met the rain on the M6. It was an excellent day’s
walking.
As always – thank you to the photographers:
Alan, Christine, Claire - for the Oldhams, Elaine, Eric, Geoff, Ian, Ken,
Mike B, Mike C, Pam, Simon and Stuart.
