Broughton in Furness 23rd June 2024
It is not the most popular part of the Lakes District but it is exceptionally beautiful with winding lanes, paths and spectacular views. On the one side we can the sea and on the other the glorious mountains.
The Oldhams were the first
off the coach as early as Penny Bridge to commence a fearsome 17.5 mile trek
south down the Ulverston Penninsula, to cross to Askham in Furness and then
turn for Broughton. However they failed to achieve their target – they only did
17 miles!
Gawthwaite was the next
stop where most of the walkers left the coach.
Two groups – Steph’s and
Stuart’s headed south while the others – John’s, Mike J’s and Mike B’s headed
north.
Stuart aimed for Gunson
Height ridge and followed it down to Bank House Moor. At Askham in Furness they
took the Coastal Path to Kirby in Furness, Foxfield Bank and finally back to
Broughton. 14m
Steph's group headed south to Goffa Crag, crossed the Lowick High Common and Brunt Riggs to return to Broughton by Foxfield.
The three groups – John,
Mike J’s and Mike B’s followed very
similar routes but at very different speeds and directions. From Askham they
traversed the Blawith Knott Ridge, Tottlebank Heights and Beacon Tarn, meeting
each other at the highest points.
Within the above loop Alan
and Edwina did the Burnley Fells and then headed for Wreaks Causeway and Bridge
back to Broughton.
Dawn and Garry aimed for
Broughton Mills, ascended the Knott and traversed the Dunnerdale Fells, a round
trip of 11 miles.
And finally Anne, Helen,
and Graham had a day at the seaside... following the Cumbria Way they headed
for Fox Field and returned along the
Disused Railway Path.
Broughton village square was bathed glorious sunshine and all who wanted a drink and a seat in the sun got one. It was a very enjoyable day.
John G has very kindly added his thoughts on their
walk....
Walk length approx. 9mls,
1500ft ascent, starting at Gawthwaite and finishing at Broughton.
A lovely network of mostly grassy tracks interlinking some fine viewpoints, from Burney with its trig point on northwards to Blawith Knott and Tottlebank Height, eventually reaching Beacon Tarn where several wild swimmers were taking advantage of the strong June sunshine.
A delightful well-graded descent led to the quiet hamlets of Green Moor and Woodland before the approach to Broughton via the shade of the old railway line. Bliss!
Also thank
you to the loyal photographers: Alan, David, Howie, Ian, Michael, Mike B, Mike
J, Pam, Pat T, Ray and Stuart.
On the way up to Broughton we stopped for a minute’s silence to remember with great sadness the loss of Mark, our regular Coach Driver.
