STAVELEY 7th January 2024

What a wonderful start to the year – a good number of walkers 43 - on the coach - all out enjoying a crisp icy day in bright sunshine.

Three groups had left the coach even before Staveley - they were heading for Scout Scar and the famous Mushroom View Point. A perfect day for viewing.

Starting from a bus stop near Sizergh Castle, Paul’s group, Pat and Steph’s group, and Stuart’s group headed west for the Brigsteer area and on to the Southern Underbarrow Scar. From the Scar Pat, Steph’s group and Paul’s group headed north, walking through Cunswick Hall area and Bonning Gate to Staveley. Stuart’s group continued up to Gurnal Dubbs and Potters Tarn to come into Staveley by Barley Bridge.

Once the coach had parked up in Staveley the rest of the groups spread out in different directions and occasionally crossing paths during the day.

From Staveley Mike’s party had progressed through Craggy Plantation and met Alan and Edwina at Littlewood Farm. After a discussion about directions! they headed up a very steep Brunt Knott. From here they descended through Elphowe to Scroggs Bridge and then ascended Reston Scar before dropping right down to the coach – almost literally!

Meanwhile Alan and Edwina had been round Spring Hag and Side House near Potter Tarn, on to Littlewood Farm, met Mike’s group there, and crossed the river over to Hulgill Fell and Reston Scar.

Mike J had led his group from Reston Scar and Hugill Fell over the valley to Elfehowe and Ghyll Bank. Here they Mike’s group who were descending from Brunt Knott. In spite of the obvious steep climb from there, they included Brunt Knott on their way round to Potter Tarn and then Staveley.

John and Angie followed the river all the way down the Kentmere valley to the village and Kentmere Hall and returned on the other side of the Tarn by Browfoot Lane.

The Oldhams group of nine set off on their 14 mile exploration of the western ridge of the Kentmere valley. They ranged as far over as the Sallows and as far north as the Garburn Road then returned by Mickle Moss and Hugill Hall.

Steve J roamed at will over both sides of the valley enjoying the freedom and solitude of the area.

All returned to time to enjoy the hospitality of the Staveley Brewery and most members were home by 7.30pm.                   A great day to start the year.
