HARTINGTON 6th August 2023

It’s quite a long run to Hartington – and it wasn’t helped by a traffic jam just beyond Buxton which added 20 minutes to the trip. But it certainly did not spoil the day. It is a beautiful and interesting area, and all seemed to have a very enjoyable day.

John  and Paul’s groups were first off the coach on the main road from Buxton to Hartington.

John headed for Park House Hill, a small but distinctive ridge described as ‘an abrupt rock tor with a scary scramble on the top’!             And of course they did it...and then had to get to Hartington.

From the same point, Paul ‘s group headed for the Green Lane - Tissington Trail to follow it to Biggin Dale and then down to Coldeaton Bridge and Alstonfield. The excitement of their day seems to have been the testing of the electric cattle fence !  Yes – it was turned on !

Pat and Steph’s group and Mike B’s group both set off at roughly the same time although it was hard to identify any group in the mixing and blending with the two other coaches which off-loaded at the same time !            Gradually the groups separated and wended their individual ways down the valley.

Steph’s group progressed down Beresford and Wolfscote Dales to Coldeaton Bridge and  returned to Hartington by the stony path up Biggin Dale.

Mike’s group followed a similar route with one or two distractions like the caves and bridges, and they too returned up Biggin Dale but were side tracked by a very welcoming Waterloo Inn in Biggin village.

The loss of 20 minutes was a challenge to Stuart but his group managed to complete most of his planned route in time. They went far west to Ecton Vale on the Manifold Trail and worked their way back to Coldeaton Bridge and Biggin Dale.

Helen and Graham completed a neat ‘Hartington Circular’ - down Wolfscote Dale and back up Biggin Dale.

It is a beautiful area with much to explore. We had a bright sunny day with an occasion shower and I think everyone had a good day’s walking.
