CONISTON VIA TORVER 20th August 2023
As the coach
headed for Coniston, John G’s party left it at Newby Bridge – a worryingly
early departure point. But a neat bit of planning was to take them diagonally across
the fells to Coniston - over to Finisthwaite, High Dam, Satterthwaite, Grisedale
and Hall Wood. They short cut the trip
down to Greenodd and then back up to Penny Bridge. 11m and 2000’
With Beacon
Fell in mind, the Oldhams alighted at Penny Bridge. They crossed Lowick, High
Common and Kirkby Moor and Beacon Fell. Although their mileage was vehemently disputed, - according to Dawn’s feet, - it was certainly
more than their leader had promised!
3200? 18+ m?
Mike B's group
were next off the coach at Water Yeat, to cross the valley to Selside and the
high level route along the east side of Coniston from where there were panoramic
views of the Lake and the Old Man. They lunched outside the delightful original
Lakeland ‘Cottage in the Clouds’ at Paramoor. Continuing the route they then
descended through Monk Coniston Woodlands (NT) and round to the Cumbria Way. 10m 1500
Mike J led
his party from Torver up though the Quarries to the Walna Scar Road - to access
White Pike and White Maiden and then to find Blind Tarn, a discrete tarn below
Brown Pike. After a frustrating search they descended by the Scar Road to
Coniston. 2,200 & 8m
Paul C also
led from Torver going south west to pick up Hummer Lane through to Water Yeat Bridge
and turning north up Natty Bridge to White Pike and White Maiden – two peaks
not many visit. Using the Walna Scar Road they descended by Bowmanstead to
Coniston. 10m and 2,300’.
Pat’s group
headed up from Lake Side, through Monk Coniston Woods to Tarn Hows and then on
to Black Fell. They returned to Iron
Keld on the west side of Tarn Hows, and from the Cottages the descended by
Cumbria Way to Coniston. 9.5m and 1500’.
Alan and
Edwina tackled Holme Fell from High Yewdale and returned over Tarn Hows and
High Guard Wood.
Starting from
Sunny Bank Anne, Helen and Graham followed the Cumbria Way along the shore of
Coniston – a delightful route but uncomfortable walking over perilous tree
roots.
But everyone
seemed to have had a good day and Mark returned us swiftly and safely back
home. Thank you
Mike B
