THRELKELD 19th March 2023
Sunday’s outing to Threlkeld situated just off the A66 Keswick road, began with a nice, quick and dry drive up to Windermere and through the Lakes past Grasmere and Thirlmere.
First off the coach this time, Stu and Ele’s group began walking from Wythburn. Instead of following the intended path on the western side of Thirlmere reservoir, the one on the eastern side was taken, because of concerns over closures along the former, due to repair of storm damage. This proved to be a far easier route, with great views across the reservoir and beyond. At the northern end of Thirlmere, a pleasant climb up and across High Rigg to descend via Tewet Tarn into Threlkeld completed the walk. 11 miles.
The
Oldhams group began next, starting from Swirls. They followed the lakeside path
to climb the delightful little ‘mini mountain’ that is Great How. Not a
‘Wainwright’ but still well worth visiting! After this, they also climbed to
High Rigg and down to Wanthwaite Bridge before tackling what must be one of
Lakeland’s toughest ‘scrambles’, namely ‘Fisher’s Wife’s Rake’.
This climb completed, they turned at the top to reach Clough Head, before descending to Threlkeld via The Old Coach Road. 13.5 miles.
Geoff
and Mike C also started from Swirls, covering a completely different route
climbing Raven Crag then descending to climb High Rigg and cross to take the
Old Railway path into Threlkeld. 12.5 miles
Next off was Paul’s group, at Thirlspot. Paul led a steep climb via Brund Gill to reach Raise Summit, turning left from here they followed the magnificent ridge which includes all the Dodds. The final climb after descending from Great Dodd, is to Clough Head, where fantastic views across to Keswick and beyond can be enjoyed. A steep steady descent from here led to the Old Coach road track, followed by a short grassy walk into Threlkeld. 10 miles.
Mike J was next off the coach, beginning his walk from Hill Top Farm (Wanthwaite Bridge). He took his group up along the Old Coach road track, to cross the notoriously boggy Threlkeld Common, which did live up to its reputation! After reaching Wallthwaite, they crossed the A66 to Scales then followed paths to reach Gategill and down into Threlkeld. 9.5 miles
Pat and Steph began from Threlkeld, taking their group via Westco and Brundholme to climb to the summit of Latrigg, with its fantastic views across Keswick and Derwentwater. The return route took them along the beautifully restored disused railway path, into Threlkeld. 9 miles
Steve J also began his solo walk from Threlkeld, to climb Blencathra via Gategill Fell, Knott Halloo, and on reaching the summit with a pause to take in the wide vista, he then crossed the ‘saddle’ to Atkinson Pike, descending to Bannerdale Crags and beyond to Bowscale Fell. Steve’s return to Threlkeld took him across Mungrisdale Common past the Cloven Stone and Glenderaterra Beck. 12 miles
Finally, Anne and Helen starting from Threlkeld, walked the good old dismantled railway path into Keswick, sampling the delights of the town, before returning via the same route. 6 miles.
Everyone enjoyed what must be described as a lovely dry if cool spring day, full of great sights, sounds and views.
A big thanks to Sharon and her staff at the ‘Salutation Inn’ Threlkeld, for not only providing our members with refreshments and a very cosy bar with a roaring coal fire, but also allowing us as usual to park our coach.
