HORTON in RIBBLESDALE 5th March 2023
Pen y Ghent
was the clear target for a number of groups but there are so many beautiful and
remarkable places on the way that we were spoilt for choice.
Pat and
Steph started for Pen y Ghent from Horton and crossed the gradually ascending
moorland to the steeper and rockier sections to the summit. They returned to
Horton by the gradually descending by the Pennine Journey path. 9m
Mike J’s
group also started from Horton using the Bracken Bottom – Gravel Rigg path, and
returned by the Foxup Moor and Hull Pot path.8m
Paul C
headed east and then north to access the summit. They then descended east again
to follow the Three Peaks route over Sulber
11m
The Oldhams
started their ascent of Pen y Ghent from Settle, following a route over Malham
Moor and Fountains Fell then over the summit and back along the Pennine Journey
path to Horton.14m
Stuart’s
group also started from Settle using the Pennine Journey path via Feizor, the
Pennine Bridle Way north to Long Scar, Thieves Moss and Sulber Nick to the
railway. 12m
John G
started from Stainforth and headed for Feizor, Thwaite Lane, Sulber Gate and Horton.10.5
Gerry’s
group left the coach at Settle to follow the Ribble Way to Stainforth, Feizor, Studrigg Scar over to Moughton and
back to Horton. 10.5m without Gerry referring to a map all day!
Mike and
Geoff left Stainforth heading for Pen y Ghent via the Pennine Way and returned
by Plover Hill and Hull Pot.
Steve J also
set off from Stainforth crossing Knowe Fell and Fountain Fell returning via
Rainscar and Churn Milk Hole.10.5.
What a range
of different routes in a beautiful and fascinating area. All parties returned to
compare notes in the ‘New Inn’. A great
day’s walking.
