WYTHBURN to GRASMERE 19th February 2023

First off the coach at Ambleside  RUFC was Pat and Steph's party, who followed their planned route to Lily Tarn and Loughrigg Tarn, but due to the very strong gusty wind they omitted Silver How.

Paul M led his private group, also from the RUFC stop, to Scandale Bridge, Rydal Hall  and  Loughrigg Terrace, before descending via Red Bank into Grasmere.

Next to leave the coach were Geoff and Mike C on a private mission up to do Fairfield via the anti clockwise route (Dove Crag) to descend via Great Rigg with enough time and energy to spare to warrant a visit to Alcock Tarn before descending into Grasmere.

Alan W 's solo venture and Anne and Helen's walk began next at Rydal.

Alan headed for Great Rigg via Nab Scar, to descend via Stone Arthur.

Anne and Helen undertook a pleasant leisurely ramble across Pelter Bridge to follow paths beside both Rydal Water and Grasmere, then into the village.

The remaining groups remained on the coach to go over Dunmail Raise, dropping to Wythburn, and disembarking before the coach turned to head back to Grasmere.

The Oldhams, as usual, followed a daunting route via Birk Side to Helvellyn, continuing along the ridge then descending to Grisedale Tarn, before another steep slog up to Fairfield Summit via Cofa Pike. Their descent via Great Rigg was hampered by the very strong gusts and allowed them no time for an optional  visit to Alcock Tarn.

Stu G,  Paul C  and Mike J  led their three separate parties up the very boggy Wythburn Valley, where in many places no actual path seemed to exist!

Stu headed up to Greenup Edge, turning left for High Raise, Sergeant Man, and Blea Rigg , avoiding Silver How, again due to increasingly strong gusts of wind.

Mike J avoided Greenup Edge and instead headed directly for Calf Crag, to follow the ridge east towards Helm Crag, which Mike wisely chose to avoid.

Paul C followed a similar route to Mike's but had time and energy to cover Helm Crag without problem.

Steve J completed a solo walk climbing to Seat Sandal, then Fairfield and down via Great Rigg and Stone Arthur to Grasmere.

All in all a great day on the Fells, which despite the strong winds and limited visibility, was safely enjoyed by everyone.
