ELTERWATER 22nd January 2023

There were eight walks ready to go as we approached Ambleside; four walking from the Rugby Club and four from Elterwater.

Stuart’s group headed south from Clappersgate, down to Pullscar Plantation and up the back of Black Crag. From there they descended to Tarn Hows across to Hodge close, down to the Cathedral Cavern and across to Wilson Place and Elterwater. A neat round of 10.5 miles.

The three other groups headed northwest from Ambleside for a steep climb up to Loughrigg Fell.

The Oldham eight continued the ridge walk over Silver How, Blea Rigg and along to descend by Stickle Ghyll steps. Howie said he felt every painful slippery step!

Paul took his group up Loughrigg Fell - a different place in Winter but they managed some views and good photographs.

Alan too went up Loughrigg and was up there early enough to catch some views before the cloud closed in and all was wet.

The other four groups started from Skelwith Bridge heading roughly in the Little Langdale direction.

Mike J took his group up to the Lingmoor Fell ridge and down the steep descent to Langdale to return along the Cumbria Way. 8.5 m

Mike B followed a low level path below Lingmoor Fell all the way to Fell Foot Farm at the end of the Tarn. They returned by the Caverns and Dale End.

Pat and Steph headed for Skelwith Bridge and returned to Elterwater by Colwith Force, Cathedral Cavern and Slater Bridge.

And finally Anne and Helen’s group took the Clappers Gate path beside the B5286 to Pull Wyke and then to Skelwith Fold. From the bridge they used the Cumbria Way Path.

The Britannia was hospitable, as they would be with forty or more enthusiastic guests ready to relax after a good day’s walking.

Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590/A591 though Ambleside and over Dunmail Raise to Wythburn, where the coach will turn round and return on the A591 to Grasmere. Park in Grasmere.  Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

Sunday 5th March 2023 – Horton in Ribblesdale

5.00 p.m. departure

Northbound to Preston, on to the M65, M65 eastbound to junction 7, via A6185/A678 to the A680, A671 to roundabout N of Whalley, A59 to Gisburn, A682/A65/B6480/B6479 to Settle, B6479 to Horton in Ribblesdale. Park in Horton in Ribblesdale. Morning coffee stop at Darwen services, M65.

                                                 What a wonderful day’s walking !         What spectacular scenery and conditions !   With reports that the Kirkstone Pass was blocked by snow the route was amended so that the coach entered the valley from the Pooley Bridge end. Some groups revised their planned walks but most were just delighted to see a good depth of snow on the fells above about 1500’ and had come prepared for it, Stuart’s group was first off the coach near Pooley Bridge to commence a 12 mile walk along the eastern side of the Lake - through Howtown, Sandwick and Silver Bay with panoramic views of the snow on Helvellyn and its close neighbours. SETTLE & CHRISTMAS MEAL 10th December 2023

  The weather forecast was for wind and rain – and we got both. But it didn’t stop the walks. Gerry’s group of seven left the coach at the small town of Hellifield and with his customary panache he traced a winding trail across the remote Newton and Langber Moors following fast flowing Becks and Gills to Scaleber Force. Always a dramatic waterfall but on this day it was spectacular. They continued over Sugar Loaf Hill to be confronted by the wonderful view of the Scar and Caves of Stockdale. At the Scaleber Falls they were joined briefly by Pat and Steph’s group who had followed a similar route from near Long Preston along Langber Lane beside the Mearbeck Plantations and down to Settle. Paul’s Group set off from Settle heading for Stockdale with the Caves in mind. They ascended High Hill and took the path along the escarpment visiting the dramatic Attermire, Victoria and Jubilee Caves. They crossed the river and returned to Settle by Stackhouse Lane. GRASMERE 9th July 2023

                                   Grasmere Account 09.07.2023 It was a bit cloudy to start with but the forecast was good - and it turned out better than good ! The first parties left the coach at the Rugby Club. Paul’s group headed for Loughrigg Fell - with its spectacular views - then descended to the Terrace. They tracked round the very thin path above Megs Gill to ascend Swinescar, and crossed Blind Tarn Moss to Easedale and Grasmere. Ian and Gerry led their group straight up Helm Crag - getting steeper every year with John C managing the very summit of the Rock. Following the undulating ridge to Calf Crag gave them a hot long walk back down Far Easedale into Grasmere. The Oldhams – still on holiday with a reduced party - started at Kelsick (I had to look that one up! – near Skelghyll) and went up Wansfell, Baystones and the Kirkstone Struggle.
