GRASMERE 4th December 2022
The new Walk Programme for 2023-24 is now available and there is a copy at the end of this publication.
There was snow on some of the higher fells where it was perilously cold - but most enjoyed a relatively winter mild and dry day.
A much
reduced Oldham Team consisting of Keith and his Deputy Leader, Howie - set off
from Ambleside to follow the Kirkstone ridge to Fairfield. They braved severe
conditions on the summit and wasted no time descending by Stone Arthur.
Paul Cutner’s group were in the same area, and facing that fierce icy wind on Great Rigg. They withdrew to Stone Arthur and the calm of Grasmere. A wise decision.
In marginally less fierce winds on the other side of Grasmere John Gartside took his
group up Sergeant Man and descended by the East Ridge to Easedale Tarn and a peaceful Grasmere village.
From
Grasmere Mike James led his group up to Alcock Tarn and then followed the traditional
Coffin Route to Rydal, returning along the Terrace past the Caves.
Ian and
Gerry also went up to Alcock Tarn and down to Rydal and returned to Grasmere by Miller Brow and Loughrigg Tarn, and then over Red Bank.
Pat’s and Mike’s groups left the coach at Ambleside.
Pat led across
Miller Brow, down to Loughrigg Tarn, followed Loughrigg Terrace down to Rydal
Hall and the Coffin Route back to Grasmere.
Mike
followed the same route over to Loughrigg Terrace and then headed for the rough
rocky slopes of Silver How to join, with some relief, the Kelbarrow path into
Grasmere.
Alan and
Edwina ascended Helm Crag from Green Burn and returned by White Crag.
Dave and Keith
explored the twisting path up to Easedale Tarn and beyond, and returned down
the sloping steps.
Simon led a ‘soothing and mindful walk’ from
Ambleside to Rydal Hall, through the grounds of High Force and along to
Grasmere by the Coffin Route.
It was good
to see Marcia out again as she traced a very familiar route through Rydal,
along the Terrace and down Red Bank to Grasmere. A very welcome return.
Thank you to all the photographers who capture the colour and the enjoyment of these walks. Howie, Alan, Mike J, Mike B, Carol J, Mike C, Chris, Jane B, Marcia, Mike Kirby, Pat and Simon.
