CROWDEN to GLOSSOP and KILIMANJARO 27th MARCH 2022
Crowden to
Glossop 2022.03.27
The sun
shone all day, and at times there was a cool wind but just ideal for walking.
Four of the
five groups left the coach at the Crowden car park and set off in their
different directions. Anne and Helen were treated to an additional few miles up
the valley in search of a safe turning space for the coach and were
subsequently dropped at their start of the Longendale Trail. They were joined
by Pat and Steph’s group who had started from the road over Woodhead Dam and
followed the same Trans Pennine Trail beside the reservoirs to Padifield
and Swineshaw Reservoir. A delightful path
through glorious scenery and a grand entry to Glossop through Manor Park -
followed by a devious Town Trail to the coach.
Paul led his
group north west towards Lad’s Leap and Millstone Rocks but before they could
get to the top of the ridge they were firmly stopped a team of firemen who were
engaged in a serious peakland fire above Rhodeswood Reservoir. They managed to
avoid the area and returned to Glossop via Devils Bridge and Thameside Trail.
The Oldhams
set off for Bleaklow Head along the Trans Pennine Trail to go east and then
access the Bleaklow ridge using Far Black Clough. They descended by James Thorn
Ridge – a modest 13.5 miles.
Stuart’s group
crossed the Torside Reservoir Dam and headed up the Clough for Bleaklow.
Unfortunately one of the party tripped and fell landing very awkwardly on her
shoulder. It was immediately clear that it was a serious injury – later diagnosed
as a fractured shoulder, and that she was in intense pain. It would have been impossible
for the group to bring her down safely. Stuart called the Mountain Rescue who mobilised
immediately and were on site in about an hour and half. The group were in awe
at the competent professional and sympathetic way in which the Team dealt with
the situation. She was brought down and attended to in Glossop hospital. Her
husband brought her back and she is comfortable and very relieved to be home.
She thanks her
colleagues and the Mountain Rescue Team for their valuable expertise and kind
sensitivity.

A few photos to follow thanks to Anne, Stuart and Mike.
And a timely contribution of photographs from
Claire and Angela’s recent exciting trip to climb Kilimanjaro.
Not often we mix walking in the Peak District and Tanzania.
Thank you Claire.
