LIMEFITT PARK 21 st November 2021

 

                

We were hardly over the Lakes District boundary when the Oldhams left the coach to start their route from Ings : to cross the Applethwaite Common and follow the western side of Kentmere to Frostwick. 14 miles and 3,500’.

Mike J and Pat’s group alighted at Windermere to cross Orrest Head, Troutbeck and headed for Wansfell. Here they joined the many walkers on the summit before descending by Baystones to Troutbeck. 8 miles and 1700 feet.

Two private groups also left the coach at Windermere. Anne and Helen’s group headed for Orrest and round to Troutbeck. Steve and Huw followed a similar route and included a few places of mutual interest in Ambleside.

Mike B’s group left the coach shortly before Troutbeck to check the Town End bridge replacement after it was washed away. It is a splendid replacement. They then ascended Wansfell and followed the wall across Baystone and Idle Hill to descend and view an ancient slate bridge below Hird Wood.               On Baystones they met Alan and Edwina doing almost the same walk in the opposite direction!    Both 9 miles & 1900' !

Paul’s group followed the Troutbeck path all the way to the end and the inevitable steep rake up to Frostwick. They returned to Limetitt along Ill Bell and Yoke ridge. 11 miles and over 3000’.

Geoff and Mike’s group followed a similar route but included Thornthwaite Crag before turning to trace the same Yoke ridge and then carried on to Sallows and Sour Howes. A round of 13 miles and 3600’

Stu and Ele headed up to the Garburn Pass to attain the same Ill Bell ridge. At Thornthwaite they descended by Scot Rake and including Troutbeck Tongue, they followed the path back to the site. 11miles and 3.000’

All groups had enjoyed a magnificent day’s walking.

 Sunday 16th January 2022 – Llangollen

5.00 p.m. departure

 Southbound to the M57, Mersey Gateway Bridge, M56, M53, A55 to Broughton, A5104 to Llandegla, A542 over the Horseshoe Pass to Llangollen. Park in Llangollen. Morning coffee stop at Chester services, M56.

                                                 What a wonderful day’s walking !         What spectacular scenery and conditions !   With reports that the Kirkstone Pass was blocked by snow the route was amended so that the coach entered the valley from the Pooley Bridge end. Some groups revised their planned walks but most were just delighted to see a good depth of snow on the fells above about 1500’ and had come prepared for it, Stuart’s group was first off the coach near Pooley Bridge to commence a 12 mile walk along the eastern side of the Lake - through Howtown, Sandwick and Silver Bay with panoramic views of the snow on Helvellyn and its close neighbours. Pat and Simon’s groups started from Watermillock to visit the popular local waterfalls and then followed the newly established lake side path to Glenridding. SETTLE & CHRISTMAS MEAL 10th December 2023

  The weather forecast was for wind and rain – and we got both. But it didn’t stop the walks. Gerry’s group of seven left the coach at the small town of Hellifield and with his customary panache he traced a winding trail across the remote Newton and Langber Moors following fast flowing Becks and Gills to Scaleber Force. Always a dramatic waterfall but on this day it was spectacular. They continued over Sugar Loaf Hill to be confronted by the wonderful view of the Scar and Caves of Stockdale. At the Scaleber Falls they were joined briefly by Pat and Steph’s group who had followed a similar route from near Long Preston along Langber Lane beside the Mearbeck Plantations and down to Settle. Paul’s Group set off from Settle heading for Stockdale with the Caves in mind. They ascended High Hill and took the path along the escarpment visiting the dramatic Attermire, Victoria and Jubilee Caves. They crossed the river and returned to Settle by Stackhouse Lane. GRASMERE 9th July 2023

                                   Grasmere Account 09.07.2023 It was a bit cloudy to start with but the forecast was good - and it turned out better than good ! The first parties left the coach at the Rugby Club. Paul’s group headed for Loughrigg Fell - with its spectacular views - then descended to the Terrace. They tracked round the very thin path above Megs Gill to ascend Swinescar, and crossed Blind Tarn Moss to Easedale and Grasmere. Ian and Gerry led their group straight up Helm Crag - getting steeper every year with John C managing the very summit of the Rock. Following the undulating ridge to Calf Crag gave them a hot long walk back down Far Easedale into Grasmere. The Oldhams – still on holiday with a reduced party - started at Kelsick (I had to look that one up! – near Skelghyll) and went up Wansfell, Baystones and the Kirkstone Struggle.
