STAVELEY 1st March 2020
What an interesting venue - more often used as
an end-point for walks from Garnett Bridge. But it was well explored by nine groups heading in each direction.
Marcia and Stuart led their parties west, into the teeth of gale-force wind heading for the mushroom shelter on the summit of Scout Scar. It was a long wet trail across flooded fields and paths. From the ‘shelter’ on the Scar both groups headed north to Cunswick Scar and to East Plumgarths and then to Burnside.

Here the routes
diverged. Marcia’s group followed the Dales Way along the river to return to
Staveley, while Stuart’s group headed off north east to Potter Fell and Gurnal
Dubs. A final round of 14 miles.
Steph and Frances followed a
similar route to the Scars and they returned by the more direct routes of
Rather Heath and Ashes Lane.
The rest of the groups commenced from Staveley.
Paul's group headed for Grasgarth on the slopes of Hugill Fell. They crossed fell over Mickle Moss and descended to Kentmere Hall, then they returned to Staveley by following the Hollin Howe ridge above the Kentmere valley.

The Oldhams set off in a
similar direction but included the Sallows. On their return they explored the
awesome crags of Rowan Tree and Scale Knotts and then descended to the head of
the valley.
Steve J reversed much of the
previous two routes but found the strength of wind on Garburn Pass quite
hazardous.
Geoff’s party quickly sped up
the valley, At Saw Mill Cottage they headed up the fell side to Sour Howes and
Sallows. Here they were confronted by strong winds and a persistently friendly
flock of sheep. Quite undaunted they returned to Staveley by Hugill Fell.
Mike's party followed the
road up the western side of the valley and crossed the river at Browfoot to
continue up to Kentmere village. A very enjoyable walk.
Helen led her group up to
Elphinhome and then on to Staveley Head contouring above the road all the way
up to Kentmere village. They returned by Browfoot Lane.
On the fell sides there was a
gale force wind but it was not too severe in the valley. Brief periods of
bright sunshine and drifts of snowdrops made it a very enjoyable day’s walking.
