THRELKELD 6th Feb 2020

There were severe weather warnings for the weekend but as it turned out, there were very strong winds but no rain and just a little sun. The evidence of the recent storms was all around with flooded fields, demolished walls and raging rivers. Inevitably many of the walks had been planned, revised, revised again and even abandoned.

There were many flooded fields visible, particularly in the Vale of St John, so Marcia led her group north for the higher ground. At Gategill the streams coming off Blencathra were in full spate and made for dramatic pictures. From there the group turned towards Blease Fell and found a very accommodating cafe in the Blencathra Centre. After a brief break they followed the paths down past Westco to view the bridge restoration on the Railway Paths to Keswick.

Alan and Edwina explored a similar area finding Kilnhow Beck in spate and then round the fell to  Roughten Gill spilling over into the valley near the Guide Stone.

Geoff, Stuart and Mike’s groups crossed the A66 and headed over the fields. Stuart and Mike’s groups met at the Stone Circle. From there Stuart and Geoff went up to Castlerigg and then down to Keswick. Stuart’s group returned through Brundholme Woods while Geoff’s group got blown across the exposed slopes of Latrigg.

Mike and Martin joined the weekend throng at Friars Head on very choppy Derwentwater, then returned through Brundholme Woods with a minor exploratory diversion at Derwentfolds.

Paul bravely led his group up to the Guide Stone and then round to the exposed track to Latrigg descending through the woods to Derwentfolds.

John G led his group up the other side of Latrigg from Westco. It was a bleak place.

Finally, to get a head start three groups continued to Keswick by coach:
Steve and Huw walked around the length of Derwentwater to Grange with no short cut across to Lodore.
Steve J did a circuit of Brundholme woods before braving the gales and crossing Latrigg from Mallen Dodd.

And Anne, Helen and Graham returned to Threlkeld by the winding lanes of Naddle Bridge.
It was a most unexpectedly pleasing day!
