CROWDEN TO GLOSSOP 19th Jan 2020

Remember - the next walk 2nd February 2020 is AMBLESIDE

The sun shone all day with a low temperature and plenty of frost.
Unfortunately the ice was nor always as solid as it appeared and there were some domestic casualties on the way:  Karen completely losing her boot, Leslie thigh deep in mud and many other near misses.

All groups left the coach at Crowden and were able to see the reservoirs at their best.

The Oldhams went north over Featherbed Moss, Whetstone Edge and Hollingworth to trace a modest round of 1800 feet but still 14 miles. At one stage they had to brave the persistent and inconvenient friendship of a Shetland pony and a donkey. There’s a suspicion is that the animals chose the wrong competitors.

Stuart and John took off up Torside Clough like greyhounds. They crossed the Bleaklow Summit, down to Dr’s Gate and down the Roman Road and home....

Geoff’s group went north to approach Bleaklow Summit from Black Clough, and then down to Dr’s Gate etc. Unfortunately for Geoff, misfortune struck a second time when he fell and damaged the replacement phone from his last visit to Glossop. Not his favourite venue.

Meanwhile Paul and Gerry’s group toiled up Black Clough, crossed the plateau and descended to the Gate. With some variations on this subsequent route all happily arrived in Glossop.

Mike‘s group followed up Torside Clough to the Bleaklow Summit then turned west to cross the rough heather to Dog Stone on the Yellowslack Ridge and pick up a delightful path down to Old Glossop.

Marcia and Mike J skilfully amended their planed route and went north to Lad's Leap. From this high ground they had glorious views of the reservoirs. On their descent to Tintwhistle they found their legitimate path obstructed by locked gates and had to do some discrete trespassing.

Anne and Helen took to enjoying Longdendale Trail beside the reservoirs and entering Old Glossop by the Swineshaw Reservoir.

Finally Frances and Steph took a similar route using the name 'The Trans Pennine Trail' and they ended up in the same place.                          An excellent day’s walking.
