SHAP TO POOLEY BRIDGE 13th Oct 2019
The walk venue is Gargrave only and then on for the meal at the Calf's Head, Worston, Clitheroe. My apologies for any confusion!
Back to Shap and Pooley Bridge
Sometime
heavy sometimes light – but the rain didn’t stop all day long!
And yet fifty Fell Walkers set off and ‘enjoyed’ walks, mostly well over 10 miles in length. The departure points were evenly divided between Shap and Hackthorpe.

The Oldhams
added a bit of history and culture to their usually Spartan expeditions. Having
‘done’ the Abbey they headed up the valley to do the Lowther Park, Castle, Hall, Mausoleum and various other chuchyard crypts..
The other
three groups followed similar routes from the Abbey up the river Lowther to Rosgill
and Bampton Grange. Here their routes only differed in their respective choice
of bus shelters or barns for lunch. Mike’s walk had started from the atmospheric
Abbey itself,
Stuart’s route crossed east over to Askham and Heughscar Fell,
while Paul’s group strayed over to the west side of Tarn Moor. On the Askham Ridge the clouds appeared to lift and show a bit of Ullswater, but not much more.

From the village of Hackthorpe Anne and Helen’s group crossed
the Lowther Castle Parkland and traced their route through Askham and round to
Roehead on the lower slopes of Heughscar Hill.
Frances and Steph followed a similar route but included the
Ullswater Lakeside path to Pooley Bridge.
Marcia’s group narrowly avoided getting involved in the
Lowther Hall 10k race and instead followed
a Forest path through Lower Deer Park to Whale on the river Lowther. From here
they went north to Askham and over the Ridge to Ullswater where they traced the
Lakeside Path Pooley Bridge.
The journey home was delayed by an unfortunate accident on
the M6 and a necessary detour on to the A6. The absence of the usual
convenience stop created a minor problem. But after much and merry discussion
Gerry fairly resolved situation in his usual laconic manner. Further details
are unnecessary!
