Southport Fell Walking Club

The day's outing began for everyone, with a soaking before boarding the coach. Rain accompanied us all the way to the Lakes, and really never stopped all day, medium to sometimes heavy rainfall resulted in everyone getting a thorough soaking to the skin.  This did not prevent an enjoyable day, although lower than planned walk routes were substituted by some, to avoid the strong gusts forecast on higher Fells.   The newly refurbished 'Stickle Barn' pub provided exactly what everyone needed, in both hot and cold drinks and food, including some magnificent (and huge) slices of homemade cake of various kinds.  The banter from members, slowly drying out, reflected the overall enjoyment of the day!   We returned to Southport accompanied by torrential rain, finding flooded roads along the way, telling us all that those at home had also had a very wet day too!  Account - courtesy of  Stu.                                    Grasmere Account 09.07.2023 It was a bit cloudy to start with but the forecast was good - and it turned out better than good ! The first parties left the coach at the Rugby Club. Paul’s group headed for Loughrigg Fell - with its spectacular views - then descended to the Terrace. They tracked round the very thin path above Megs Gill to ascend Swinescar, and crossed Blind Tarn Moss to Easedale and Grasmere. Ian and Gerry led their group straight up Helm Crag - getting steeper every year with John C managing the very summit of the Rock. Following the undulating ridge to Calf Crag gave them a hot long walk back down Far Easedale into Grasmere. The Oldhams – still on holiday with a reduced party - started at Kelsick (I had to look that one up! – near Skelghyll) and went up Wansfell, Baystones and the Kirkstone Struggle.   Heavy rain was forecast so we just had to deal with it wherever we were at the time. Just two coach stops were needed – Keswick and Braithwaite. At Braithwaite Anne, Helen and Graham left the coach to follow devious paths and eventually the Pennine Way to Keswick. From the same stop Alan and Edwina headed for Cat Bells prepared to make alternative plans should the weather dictate. And John G’s group set off for Whit Beck to access the path to Lonsdale Fell and Burnt Hause – all subject to the weather – and return by Brundholme Wood. Pat and Steph’s group followed the paths down the east side of Derwentwater to Rosthwaite and returned with a timely use of public transport. Afer the Keswisk stop the coach then sped on to Chapel Bridge at Bassenthwaite to drop off the remaining four groups. To access Skiddaw the Oldhams headed for Horsemoor Hills and Cockup and returned to Keswick by Millbeck and Thrushwood. As forecast - it was very wet and windy on the tops. Stuart h...

  BLOG UPDATE You may not be aware but the next walk on 11 th June to Llanberis has been cancelled due to lack of numbers. Unfortunately only 19 members had booked and with that number the Club would have incurred a loss of £375. Regrettably the Committee felt that that a loss of that amount was unacceptable. So the next walk is Braithwaite to Keswick 23 rd July .   It is usually a popular walk – on the last occasion there were 48 on the coach. It was a lovely day in July and many members enjoyed the walk back to Keswick in the glorious sunshine (and choc ice on the Portinscale Footbridge!) I can’t guarantee the weather but hoping to see a full coach again.... Please book as soon as possible. Stuart is NOW accepting bookings by phone in the usual way. Mike

                                    What a wonderful day’s walking, in a delightful area we have not visited since 2019.                         So - new to some but familiar to others. All four groups departed from Dufton village. The Oldhams sped off in a northerly direction heading for the remote areas of Upper Teesdale: across miles of moorland tracks to Knock Fell, Great Dunn Fell and Cross Fell. Unfortunately, in a slight fall, Claire suffered an injury to her hand – later diagnosed as a broken finger. But it didn’t hold them back and neither did rescuing a sheep from a wire fence unduly delay them.                                       It was Kettlewell on Sunday and nearly all were off the coach and ready to walk by 10.15. And a beautiful day it turned out to be. Martin’s group left the coach at Conistone heading for a scramble up the Dib and then on to the Dales Way to join Bycliffe ‘Road’. They crossed Grassington Moor to the disused mine workings, along Dukes New Road to Hebden Beck and finally the Dales Way back to Linton Falls and Grassington. The target for Mike J’s group was Conistone Pie, a conspicuous rock formation with great views of Wharfdale and Littondale. They followed the Dales Way and Highgate Leys Lane up to the trig point on the Moor and then descended to Conistone Pie returning along Scot Gate Lane.
