LANGDALE 23 July 2023



The day's outing began for everyone, with a soaking before boarding the coach.

Rain accompanied us all the way to the Lakes, and really never stopped all day, medium to sometimes heavy rainfall resulted in everyone getting a thorough soaking to the skin. 

This did not prevent an enjoyable day, although lower than planned walk routes were substituted by some, to avoid the strong gusts forecast on higher Fells.

 The newly refurbished 'Stickle Barn' pub provided exactly what everyone needed, in both hot and cold drinks and food, including some magnificent (and huge) slices of homemade cake of various kinds. 

The banter from members, slowly drying out, reflected the overall enjoyment of the day!

 We returned to Southport accompanied by torrential rain, finding flooded roads along the way, telling us all that those at home had also had a very wet day too!

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590 through Newby Bridge and Penny Bridge, A5084 to Torver, A593 to Coniston. Park in Coniston. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

 Sunday 3rd September 2023 – Mungrisdale to Keswick

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 40, A66 westbound, minor road to Mungrisdale, where the coach will turn round and return to the A66 and go on to Keswick. Park in Keswick. Morning coffee stop at Tebay services.

                                                 What a wonderful day’s walking !         What spectacular scenery and conditions !   With reports that the Kirkstone Pass was blocked by snow the route was amended so that the coach entered the valley from the Pooley Bridge end. Some groups revised their planned walks but most were just delighted to see a good depth of snow on the fells above about 1500’ and had come prepared for it, Stuart’s group was first off the coach near Pooley Bridge to commence a 12 mile walk along the eastern side of the Lake - through Howtown, Sandwick and Silver Bay with panoramic views of the snow on Helvellyn and its close neighbours. Pat and Simon’s groups started from Watermillock to visit the popular local waterfalls and then followed the newly established lake side path to Glenridding. SETTLE & CHRISTMAS MEAL 10th December 2023

  The weather forecast was for wind and rain – and we got both. But it didn’t stop the walks. Gerry’s group of seven left the coach at the small town of Hellifield and with his customary panache he traced a winding trail across the remote Newton and Langber Moors following fast flowing Becks and Gills to Scaleber Force. Always a dramatic waterfall but on this day it was spectacular. They continued over Sugar Loaf Hill to be confronted by the wonderful view of the Scar and Caves of Stockdale. At the Scaleber Falls they were joined briefly by Pat and Steph’s group who had followed a similar route from near Long Preston along Langber Lane beside the Mearbeck Plantations and down to Settle. Paul’s Group set off from Settle heading for Stockdale with the Caves in mind. They ascended High Hill and took the path along the escarpment visiting the dramatic Attermire, Victoria and Jubilee Caves. They crossed the river and returned to Settle by Stackhouse Lane. GRASMERE 9th July 2023

                                   Grasmere Account 09.07.2023 It was a bit cloudy to start with but the forecast was good - and it turned out better than good ! The first parties left the coach at the Rugby Club. Paul’s group headed for Loughrigg Fell - with its spectacular views - then descended to the Terrace. They tracked round the very thin path above Megs Gill to ascend Swinescar, and crossed Blind Tarn Moss to Easedale and Grasmere. Ian and Gerry led their group straight up Helm Crag - getting steeper every year with John C managing the very summit of the Rock. Following the undulating ridge to Calf Crag gave them a hot long walk back down Far Easedale into Grasmere. The Oldhams – still on holiday with a reduced party - started at Kelsick (I had to look that one up! – near Skelghyll) and went up Wansfell, Baystones and the Kirkstone Struggle.
