GRASMERE 9th July 2023

It was a bit
cloudy to start with but the forecast was good - and it turned out better than
good !
The first
parties left the coach at the Rugby Club. Paul’s group headed for Loughrigg
Fell - with its spectacular views - then descended to the Terrace. They tracked
round the very thin path above Megs Gill to ascend Swinescar, and crossed Blind
Tarn Moss to Easedale and Grasmere.
Ian and
Gerry led their group straight up Helm Crag - getting steeper every year with John
C managing the very summit of the Rock. Following the undulating ridge to Calf
Crag gave them a hot long walk back down Far Easedale into Grasmere.
The Oldhams
– still on holiday with a reduced party - started at Kelsick (I had to look
that one up! – near Skelghyll) and went up Wansfell, Baystones and the Kirkstone
Struggle. From here they crossed to Rydal Park and made their tortuous way down
to Grasmere.
Mike’s group
started from Ambleside with that steep Miller Brow – over to Loughrigg Tarn. The
area was decorated by colourful tents and swimmers in the water! They crossed
Red Bank to Dow Bank and round to The Wyke where, at the sight of the Wray Gill
access to Silver How, the party split and Huw and Mike headed down for Thorny
How in Lancrigg.
Helen and
Graham used Badger’s Bridge to follow their route round Grasmere Tarn to the
village.
Pat and
Steph took their group up and over Silver How to Red Bank, and returned by
Loughrigg Terrace and Dove Cottage – a demanding round.
Alan and
Edwina set off for Tarn Crag above Easedale and returned by Stenners Crag and
Stythwaite Steps.
Steve went
up Far Easedale to follow the Greenup Edge, Sergeant Man, High Raise ridge to
Silver How. A perfect day for such panoramic route.
