Annual Glaramara Walking Break: 31st May - 3rd June 2026


There were 19 members of the Southport Fellwalking Club (plus Lola the dog) who went to Borrowdale this year. As they have done since 2012 they stayed in the beautiful Glaramara Hotel in Seatoller, which over the years has evolved from a Youth Guest House operated by the Co-Operative Holiday Association in 1935, to the independent Glaramara Hotel that is so well known today. The accommodation and food as always was second to none.

The group was spoiled last year with almost unbroken sunshine over the four days, but weren't so lucky this year even after the recent heatwave. Nevertheless everyone managed to get out and about, completing a variety of walks (both high and low) and even a trip at last to the Keswick Pencil Museum!!!

Thanks to Anne for making the necessary arrangements and also for hosting the annual quiz night, which this year was won by the team made up of John G, Pat T, Bob, Lorraine and Anthony.

The weather forecast for the day was certainly mixed, and on the way up the motorway it looked even more grim at times. As the last of the groups got off the coach light rain fell and the waterproofs went on for the first and not the last time. After leaving the coach at Troutbeck, the Oldham’s group made their way across a series of fields to Mungrisdale. This was meant to be the ideal warm-up before the climb up Souther Fell. However the overgrown fields and the continuous stream of broken stiles created an obstacle course which no one expected. Thankfully the paths on the fells were much more favourable and the climb up Souther Fell went without a hitch.   The views from the top were stunning, reminding everyone of why they love fell walking so much! LLANBERIS - 22nd June 2025

  It was an eventful return to Wales for the walkers from SFWC. Thoughts of an exhilerating challenge for some taking on Crib Goch were quickly banished. Due to the deteriorating weather forecast en route to Wales, the walk leaders were forced to re-assess the routes that they would take. This resulted in all the groups resorting to plan ‘B’ and two of them avoiding the impressive but difficult ridge walk of Crib Goch. Unfortunately as Geoff led his group of five up to the Y  Lliwedd ridge, as they reached the start along the top Barry suffered a heavy fall in which he hit his head, cut his right hand and bruised both legs and his hip. The wind and rain had by then set in and, assisted by Geoff and all his party, Barry was helped along the ridge. They had passed the point where turning back was not a safe or wise option. BETWYS-Y-COED - 28th September 2025

 The forecast was favourable and the day proved to be dry and calm for the walkers as they made their way across a variety of paths and tracks. Unfortunately for them there was a total absence of footpath signage in most areas, something that has been noted on other Welsh walks in the past! And even worse was the state of the paths that did exist - rutted and water filled, most likely as a result of trails bikes and other vehicles. However it made for a fun-filled day!! On alighting the coach at Dolwyddelan, The Oldham’s headed south to Y Ro Wen. A beautiful, lesser known peak with stunning views across the Snowdonia National Park with not another soul in sight. Pure bliss! From here the group began navigating their way cross-country to the peak of Ro Lwyd. The walk card warned of no paths in places but it didn't quite prepare the group for the calf deep bogs, thigh high heather and young pine forests they had use, to support each other through to reach the final peak of Iwerddon....
