HATHERSAGE 25th May 2025



It was May Bank Holiday weekend and the roads were predictably busy. But once over the Snake Pass the groups got ready for their individual drop off points. 

Ian’s group were first off the coach at Hagg Farm with the target of the Roman Road to Winhill Pike, just at the foot of Lady Bower. They then went south to cross the River Derwent at Thornhill and head for Lead Mill Bridge and into Hathersage. Approx 10.5 m

Pat and Steph’s group were next off the coach at Lady Bower Bridge. They crossed Yorkshire Bridge to follow the River Derwent to Leadmill Bridge and then along into Hathersage.  6 miles.

From the same place Mike’s group inspected the spectacular reservoir features and then headed up the New Road to Bole Hill well below Stanage Edge Ridge and followed it round to descend through the beautiful houses of Camp Green.  7m

Meanwhile the Oldhams were doing the whole 14 mile ridge walk from Moscar House to Burbage Moor visiting Robin Hood’s Cave en route.

At the same time Geoff’s group were following the same ridge from the Bamford Derwent Hotel to  the Millstone Edge, including Robin’s Cave and a stretch of the River Derwent, then down to Hathersage.  12m

And finally - from Moscar Lodge Stuart followed the same Stanage Edge Ridge to Burbage Rocks and Burbage Bridge and finally through Oxhay Woods into Hathersage. And of course he visited Robin Hood’s Cave.....and the Stanage trig point. 14m

The day had been a gentle reminder that this area has plenty of wonderful features and beautiful scenery to offer.

Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590/A591 to Windermere, A592 over the Kirkstone Pass to Glenridding. Park in Glenridding. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

Sunday 22nd June 2025 – Llanberis

5.30 p.m. departure

M57 south, Mersey Gateway Bridge, M56, A55 westbound to junction 19, A470 to Betws-y-Coed, A5 to Capel Curig, A4086 to Pen-y-Gwryd and on to Llanberis, dropping groups off at Pen-y-Pass if requested. Park in Llanberis. Return via A4244/A55. Morning coffee stop at Chester services, M56.

Sunday 6th July 2025 – Shap via A6

BARBON to SEDBERGH 7th July 2024

  There were four walks available this week, and three private. In fact, five of the groups followed very similar routes – but at different speeds, obviously ! Starting from Barden Park - Paul’s, Geoff’s and Stuart’s groups headed for Castle Knott and the Calf Top ridge. Following the ridge north, they turned at Combe Scar to descend by Long Bank and Brown Knott to the valley. Here they picked up the Dales Way and Pennine Journey path to Sedbergh. Approximately 12 miles.  And then the rain really started ! Meanwhile the Oldham Group had travelled south east from Barbon to cross to the Marble Steps Pot area and ascend Grargarath Fell. They followed this ridge to Great Coum and down to Dent and back to Sedbergh - demanding 17.5 miles. Two groups stared from Sedbergh itself. Pat led her group over the Settlebeck Bridge to follow the twists and turns of the River Rawthey till it joined the River Lune near the spectacular Lune Viaduct, and then back through the lanes and farm...

  It was a very pleasant day for walking made all the more enjoyable by the comparison with the previous and subsequent days of continuous rain. Steph’s party were the first to leave the coach at Ings, to follow the Dubbs Road over the ridge to the Troutbeck Valley. They followed the path on eastern sides of the river up to Hagg Bridge and returned on the western side to the Old Post Office Tea Rooms and eventually Limefitt Park.   11m   1200’ Alan and Edwina started their walk by going over Orrest Head then using the Dubbs Road and Garburn Road to Troutbeck. From here followed the river using both the Ing and Hagg bridges and eventually back to Limefitt Park. 10m 1500’ The Oldhams set off on a mission. Keith wanted to do the Kentmere Round. It involved crossing the Garburn ridge, down Kentmere Reservoir and up the Nam Bield Pass and back along High Street and Thornthwaite and down Hagg Gill. 16 miles and 4000’   Mike and Gerry led their group up the valley t...

GLENRIDDING 8th June 2025

 It was a pretty good day for a walk in the Lakes....well at least at low level. Up higher the temperature dropped and coats, hats and gloves were the order of the day for a short while. There were five led walks and three private ones. Mike and Martin’s group followed Grisedale Beck all the way up the stunningly beautiful valley to Grisedale Tarn – achieved by all except Mike and Martin who stood guard at the Ruthwaite Lodge!  A very satisfied party returned down the valley, and from Lanty’s Tarn descended the 250 steps to the Travellers’ Rest for a well-earned drink. Good company and beautiful scenery. 9/10 miles and 1800 ft.  Paul took his group 10 miles and 2,500 ft (with a descent of 3,500 ft)!! But an excellent walk was enjoyed by all of the group , with the weather so much better than expected. They completed all of their planned walk with their objective being High Street.
