GRASSINGTON 11th May 2025



What a day !  Glorious sunshine all day and miles of beautiful Yorkshire paths to follow.

Gerry and Ian’s group kindly included Mike’s group since they were going in roughly the same direction and nobody knows Yorkshire better than Gerry. And so, starting from Cracoe they crossed the Thorpe and Langerton fields and down to cross the R Wharf by various precarious means. They then headed up beyond Hebden through the wilderness of mine workings to Grassington – while some continued to Yarnbury Summit.

Stuart departed at the same time to follow a route on the west of Wharfdale to visit Kilnsey and return on the east side.

At Rylston Geoff’s group set off for Sunmoor Hill on Cracoe Fell. Reaching all the high points they descended to the river to cross it in an imaginative and challenging styles. See the movie.

Shortly afterwards Alan and Edwina left the coach heading for Ebolton Cave and Hill at Thorpe – then down to the Wharf.

A smaller than usual group of Oldhams sped off from Grassington to do an 18 mile circuit of Grassington Moor including a section of Lady Anne Way, Meugher and Grimshaw Reservoir.

Clare led her group north up to Conistone area and into the pastures above the river returning by the Dib.

Simon roamed round Grass Wood Nature Reserve on the Dewbottom Scar paths – a place of natural peace...

All returned to the summer hospitality of Grassington.  It was a very enjoyable day’s fell walking.

5.30 p.m. departure

Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590/A591 to Windermere, A592 over the Kirkstone Pass to Glenridding. Park in Glenridding. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

Sunday 22nd June 2025 – Llanberis via A55/A4244

5.30 p.m. departure

M57, Runcorn Bridge, M56, A55 westbound to junction 11 (the A5), A4244, A4086 to Llanberis. Park in Llanberis. Morning coffee stop at Chester services, M56.

BARBON to SEDBERGH 7th July 2024

  There were four walks available this week, and three private. In fact, five of the groups followed very similar routes – but at different speeds, obviously ! Starting from Barden Park - Paul’s, Geoff’s and Stuart’s groups headed for Castle Knott and the Calf Top ridge. Following the ridge north, they turned at Combe Scar to descend by Long Bank and Brown Knott to the valley. Here they picked up the Dales Way and Pennine Journey path to Sedbergh. Approximately 12 miles.  And then the rain really started ! Meanwhile the Oldham Group had travelled south east from Barbon to cross to the Marble Steps Pot area and ascend Grargarath Fell. They followed this ridge to Great Coum and down to Dent and back to Sedbergh - demanding 17.5 miles. Two groups stared from Sedbergh itself.   It was a very pleasant day for walking made all the more enjoyable by the comparison with the previous and subsequent days of continuous rain. Steph’s party were the first to leave the coach at Ings, to follow the Dubbs Road over the ridge to the Troutbeck Valley. They followed the path on eastern sides of the river up to Hagg Bridge and returned on the western side to the Old Post Office Tea Rooms and eventually Limefitt Park.   11m   1200’ Alan and Edwina started their walk by going over Orrest Head then using the Dubbs Road and Garburn Road to Troutbeck. From here followed the river using both the Ing and Hagg bridges and eventually back to Limefitt Park. 10m 1500’ The Oldhams set off on a mission. Keith wanted to do the Kentmere Round. GLENRIDDING 8th June 2025

 It was a pretty good day for a walk in the Lakes....well at least at low level. Up higher the temperature dropped and coats, hats and gloves were the order of the day for a short while. There were five led walks and three private ones. Mike and Martin’s group followed Grisedale Beck all the way up the stunningly beautiful valley to Grisedale Tarn – achieved by all except Mike and Martin who stood guard at the Ruthwaite Lodge!  A very satisfied party returned down the valley, and from Lanty’s Tarn descended the 250 steps to the Travellers’ Rest for a well-earned drink. Good company and beautiful scenery. 9/10 miles and 1800 ft.  Paul took his group 10 miles and 2,500 ft (with a descent of 3,500 ft)!! But an excellent walk was enjoyed by all of the group , with the weather so much better than expected. They completed all of their planned walk with their objective being High Street.
