Crowden via Glossop 16th March 2025

 


It was a beautiful day and there was a sense of spring in the air.

First off the coach were John and Debbie who set off from Glossop for the intriguing target of Harry Hut and Burnt Hill – two peaks just south of the town. 8.5 m

Geoff’s group was the next off the coach at The Hollins. And from Torside Reservoir they headed up the Pennine Way to Bleaklow Head, spent some time at the Crash Site then followed the Ridge to Doctors’ Gate and descended to Glossop. 11m and 2.0000’

Each of the other parties started their walks from Crowden.

Ascending by the Hollins Stuart headed along the Pennine Way to Wild Boar, on to Bleaklow then the Hern Stones, Alport Low and down to Glossop. 12.5m  2,000

Martin’s group followed a mixture of tracks and paths and short sections of roadway to ascend part of the way up Clough Edge and then turn for Blackshaw Farm. 8.5 m and 1200’

Dawn led her group along the Pennine Way towards Featherbed Moss and then headed for Clough Edge, Cock Hill and down to Glossop. 15m and 3000’

Pat and Steph offered a walk of various reservoirs on the south side of Torside including Rhodeswood and Swineside and then into Glossop. 8.5m and 900’

Paul took his group north west to Devil’s Bridge with a warning of ‘rough, rocky, stony ground, muddy tracks with a risk of slipping on wet and loose  surfaces’ !   And he still had four followers - but no complaints. 10m and 1700’

It was a very enjoyable visit to a popular area.

Sunday 30th March 2025 – Mungrisdale to Keswick 5.30 p.m. departure

Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 40, A66 westbound, minor road to Mungrisdale, where the coach will turn round and return to the A66 and go on to Keswick. Because of new parking constraints in Keswick, the coach will drop off in Keswick if required (but not in a car park) then park outside the town, returning to park in the usual Booth’s car park around 3pm. Morning coffee stop at Tebay services.

Sunday 13th April 2025 – Coniston via Torver

5.30 p.m. departure

Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590 through Newby Bridge and Penny Bridge, A5084 to Torver, A593 to Coniston. Park in Coniston. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

Sunday 27th April 2025 - Langdale

5.30 p.m. departure

Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590/A591 through Windermere to Ambleside, A593 to Skelwith Bridge, B5343 to Langdale. Park near the New Dungeon Ghyll hotel. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

BARBON to SEDBERGH 7th July 2024

  There were four walks available this week, and three private. In fact, five of the groups followed very similar routes – but at different speeds, obviously ! Starting from Barden Park - Paul’s, Geoff’s and Stuart’s groups headed for Castle Knott and the Calf Top ridge. Following the ridge north, they turned at Combe Scar to descend by Long Bank and Brown Knott to the valley. Here they picked up the Dales Way and Pennine Journey path to Sedbergh. Approximately 12 miles.  And then the rain really started ! Meanwhile the Oldham Group had travelled south east from Barbon to cross to the Marble Steps Pot area and ascend Grargarath Fell. They followed this ridge to Great Coum and down to Dent and back to Sedbergh - demanding 17.5 miles. Two groups stared from Sedbergh itself. Broughton in Furness 23rd June 2024

                                             It is not the most popular part of the Lakes District but it is exceptionally beautiful with winding lanes, paths and spectacular views. On the one side we can the sea and on the other the glorious mountains. The Oldhams were the first off the coach as early as Penny Bridge to commence a fearsome 17.5 mile trek south down the Ulverston Penninsula, to cross to Askham in Furness and then turn for Broughton. However they failed to achieve their target – they only did 17 miles! Gawthwaite was the next stop where most of the walkers left the coach. Two groups – Steph’s and Stuart’s headed south while the others – John’s, Mike J’s and Mike B’s headed north. Stuart aimed for Gunson Height ridge and followed it down to Bank House Moor.   It was a very pleasant day for walking made all the more enjoyable by the comparison with the previous and subsequent days of continuous rain. Steph’s party were the first to leave the coach at Ings, to follow the Dubbs Road over the ridge to the Troutbeck Valley. They followed the path on eastern sides of the river up to Hagg Bridge and returned on the western side to the Old Post Office Tea Rooms and eventually Limefitt Park.   11m   1200’ Alan and Edwina started their walk by going over Orrest Head then using the Dubbs Road and Garburn Road to Troutbeck. From here followed the river using both the Ing and Hagg bridges and eventually back to Limefitt Park. 10m 1500’ The Oldhams set off on a mission. Keith wanted to do the Kentmere Round.
