ABER TO CONWAY 2nd February 2025

 

Happily the morning rain did not continue over the day and the groups enjoyed a range of walks from promenades, coastal paths and open moorland.

Geoff’s group were the first off the coach at Rhos on Sea to start the Coastal Path all the way round the Great and Little Orme and eventually into Conway. 13m.

Mike J’s group was next to leave the coach at Llandudno Junction to follow the A547 over the Bridge and then paths over Conway mountain to view  Conway from both sides of the river. 8.5m

Pat and Steph’s group left the coach at Penmaenmawr to follow the Coastal Path past Penmaenbach Point, the Marina and into Conway.  8.5 m

The other three groups started their walks on the other side of the river.

From Llanfairfechan the Oldhams headed for the back of the steep sided Penmaenmawr Quarries area and followed the Clip yr Orsedd ridge round to Conway Mountain and down to Conway.  13m

Paul’s and John’s combined group started from Aber following the North West Path, an historic trail across the lower slopes of Conway Mountain and then entered Conway town by Bodlondeb Wood. 11m

And finally Stuart and John also set off from Aber. They followed the moorland North Wales Path along the slopes of Foel- ganol, across to Maen Esgob and on to Pensychnant and Conway Mountain. 13 m

It had been an enjoyable day’s walking.

5.00 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A591 through Windermere and Ambleside to Stanah, B5322 through St John’s in the Vale to Threlkeld. Park in Threlkeld. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

 Sunday 16th March 2025 - Crowden to Glossop

5.00 p.m. departure

 M62 Eastbound and on to the M67, A628 along Longdendale to Crowden, B6105 to Glossop. Park in Glossop. Morning coffee stop at Burtonwood services, M62.

BARBON to SEDBERGH 7th July 2024

  There were four walks available this week, and three private. In fact, five of the groups followed very similar routes – but at different speeds, obviously ! Starting from Barden Park - Paul’s, Geoff’s and Stuart’s groups headed for Castle Knott and the Calf Top ridge. Following the ridge north, they turned at Combe Scar to descend by Long Bank and Brown Knott to the valley. Here they picked up the Dales Way and Pennine Journey path to Sedbergh. Approximately 12 miles.  And then the rain really started ! Meanwhile the Oldham Group had travelled south east from Barbon to cross to the Marble Steps Pot area and ascend Grargarath Fell. They followed this ridge to Great Coum and down to Dent and back to Sedbergh - demanding 17.5 miles. Two groups stared from Sedbergh itself. GLENRIDDING via POOLEY BRIDGE 3rd MARCH 2024

                                                 What a wonderful day’s walking !         What spectacular scenery and conditions !   With reports that the Kirkstone Pass was blocked by snow the route was amended so that the coach entered the valley from the Pooley Bridge end. Some groups revised their planned walks but most were just delighted to see a good depth of snow on the fells above about 1500’ and had come prepared for it, Stuart’s group was first off the coach near Pooley Bridge to commence a 12 mile walk along the eastern side of the Lake - through Howtown, Sandwick and Silver Bay with panoramic views of the snow on Helvellyn and its close neighbours. Broughton in Furness 23rd June 2024

                                             It is not the most popular part of the Lakes District but it is exceptionally beautiful with winding lanes, paths and spectacular views. On the one side we can the sea and on the other the glorious mountains. The Oldhams were the first off the coach as early as Penny Bridge to commence a fearsome 17.5 mile trek south down the Ulverston Penninsula, to cross to Askham in Furness and then turn for Broughton. However they failed to achieve their target – they only did 17 miles! Gawthwaite was the next stop where most of the walkers left the coach. Two groups – Steph’s and Stuart’s headed south while the others – John’s, Mike J’s and Mike B’s headed north. Stuart aimed for Gunson Height ridge and followed it down to Bank House Moor.
