BRAITHWAITE 28th APRIL 2024

This week the Club returned to an area used less infrequently in recent years  but offering a range of interesting walks on the north western fells.

Grisedale Pike and Hopegill Head featured largely in the list of walks.

Mike C’s group followed Grisedale Beck up the valley to the Hause and on to Sand Hill and Hopegill Head. They returned by Grisedale Pike and Sleet How paths.

Stuart followed a similar route in reverse by starting with Grisedale Head from Heavy Side and Sleet How and returning by Hope Gill Head and the Hause.

Suzy and Jenny followed the same Grisedale Beck and returned from Crag Hill by Eel Crag, Sail and Outerside.

Gerry and Huw headed for Barrow. They followed the ridge up to Outerside and then traced Stonycroft Ghyll back down to Stair and Braithwaite.

The Oldhams looped north round Capelbeck into the Whinlatter Forest to Swinside Plantation then over Hope Gill Head and on to Crag and Sail.

Mike J led his group up over Steel End to Outerside and Force Crag Mine,  following the Beck back to Braithwaite.

Pat and Steph headed along the Newlands Beck for Little Town and Skelgill then through the Woods to Portinscale and Braithwaite.

John and Debbie also followed the Newlands Beck but up to Yewthwaite to ascend Cat Bells from the south by a ‘zizaggy greasy path’ up to Hause Gate.

Finally Steph & Pat's usual group of 5 started from Braithwaite and did a grand tour of Newlands Valley, passing beneath Barrow and Rowling End to Gillbrow to Little Town calling in at the delightful Newlands Church with its very interesting Museum on the way.

Then we passed beneath Cat Bells to Skelgill and through the woods to Portinscale where we enjoyed refreshments. It was a very pleasant day, we were sheltered in the valley and it was quite warm and the views of the surrounding mountains were perfect.

We look forward to returning to the valley in future.

All groups arrived back safely, and the return to Braithwaite was considered a great success.
