GLENRIDDING via POOLEY BRIDGE 3rd MARCH 2024


                                                


What a wonderful day’s walking !        What spectacular scenery and conditions !

 With reports that the Kirkstone Pass was blocked by snow the route was amended so that the coach entered the valley from the Pooley Bridge end.

Some groups revised their planned walks but most were just delighted to see a good depth of snow on the fells above about 1500’ and had come prepared for it,

Stuart’s group was first off the coach near Pooley Bridge to commence a 12 mile walk along the eastern side of the Lake - through Howtown, Sandwick and Silver Bay with panoramic views of the snow on Helvellyn and its close neighbours.

Pat and Simon’s groups started from Watermillock to visit the popular local waterfalls and then followed the newly established lake side path to Glenridding.

The Oldhams also alighted at Aira Force but they headed up to Dockray to follow the Dodds Ridge along to Raise and Stang and then down to Glenridding.

The other six groups started from Glenridding. Paul led his group across the valley and up to Boardale Hause, on to Place Fell and returned along Ullswater.

 John followed a similar route up to the Hause, was tempted by Angle Tarn and returned by Boardale Hause.

Mike C’s party went up Angle Tarn and onto the Knott. They returned via Hartsop and Patterdale.

Mike J completely rerouted and took his group up to Gowbarrow from where they had some fine views up the valley.

Mike and Gerry’s group went up to below Arnison Crag and descended by Glenamara Park and then went round to Glenridding Mines.

Alan W headed up past Greenside mines for Whiteside above Kepple Cove and included Glenridding Dodd on his return route.

It was a wonderful day’s walking surrounded by spectacular snow scenes.

 M57, M62 eastbound, M60, A555, A6 to New Mills, A6015 to Hayfield, A624 southbound to Chapel-en-le-Frith, A6, A623, turn left on the B6049, Bradwell, A6187 to Castleton. Park in Castleton. Morning coffee stop at Burtonwood services, M62.

 Sunday 31st March 2024 – Grassington

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, on to the M65, M65 eastbound to junction 7, via A6185/A678 to the A680, A671 to roundabout N of Whalley, A59 to the Skipton roundabout, B6265 to Grassington. Park in Grassington. Morning coffee stop at Darwen services, M65.

 Sunday 14th April 2024 - Langdale

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590/A591 through Windermere to Ambleside, A593 to Skelwith Bridge, B5343 to Langdale.  Park near the New Dungeon Ghyll hotel.  Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

BARBON to SEDBERGH 7th July 2024

  There were four walks available this week, and three private. In fact, five of the groups followed very similar routes – but at different speeds, obviously ! Starting from Barden Park - Paul’s, Geoff’s and Stuart’s groups headed for Castle Knott and the Calf Top ridge. Following the ridge north, they turned at Combe Scar to descend by Long Bank and Brown Knott to the valley. Here they picked up the Dales Way and Pennine Journey path to Sedbergh. Approximately 12 miles.  And then the rain really started ! Meanwhile the Oldham Group had travelled south east from Barbon to cross to the Marble Steps Pot area and ascend Grargarath Fell. They followed this ridge to Great Coum and down to Dent and back to Sedbergh - demanding 17.5 miles. Two groups stared from Sedbergh itself. Pat led her group over the Settlebeck Bridge to follow the twists and turns of the River Rawthey till it joined the River Lune near the spectacular Lune Viaduct, and then back through the lanes and farms of Sedb

Broughton in Furness 23rd June 2024

                                             It is not the most popular part of the Lakes District but it is exceptionally beautiful with winding lanes, paths and spectacular views. On the one side we can the sea and on the other the glorious mountains. The Oldhams were the first off the coach as early as Penny Bridge to commence a fearsome 17.5 mile trek south down the Ulverston Penninsula, to cross to Askham in Furness and then turn for Broughton. However they failed to achieve their target – they only did 17 miles! Gawthwaite was the next stop where most of the walkers left the coach. Two groups – Steph’s and Stuart’s headed south while the others – John’s, Mike J’s and Mike B’s headed north. Stuart aimed for Gunson Height ridge and followed it down to Bank House Moor. At Askham in Furness they took the Coastal Path to Kirby in Furness, Foxfield Bank and finally back to Broughton. 14m Steph's group headed south to Goffa Crag, crossed the Lowick High Common and Brunt Rigg
