GLENRIDDING via POOLEY BRIDGE 3rd MARCH 2024


                                                


What a wonderful day’s walking !        What spectacular scenery and conditions !

 With reports that the Kirkstone Pass was blocked by snow the route was amended so that the coach entered the valley from the Pooley Bridge end.

Some groups revised their planned walks but most were just delighted to see a good depth of snow on the fells above about 1500’ and had come prepared for it,

Stuart’s group was first off the coach near Pooley Bridge to commence a 12 mile walk along the eastern side of the Lake - through Howtown, Sandwick and Silver Bay with panoramic views of the snow on Helvellyn and its close neighbours.

Pat and Simon’s groups started from Watermillock to visit the popular local waterfalls and then followed the newly established lake side path to Glenridding.

The Oldhams also alighted at Aira Force but they headed up to Dockray to follow the Dodds Ridge along to Raise and Stang and then down to Glenridding.

The other six groups started from Glenridding. Paul led his group across the valley and up to Boardale Hause, on to Place Fell and returned along Ullswater.

 John followed a similar route up to the Hause, was tempted by Angle Tarn and returned by Boardale Hause.

Mike C’s party went up Angle Tarn and onto the Knott. They returned via Hartsop and Patterdale.

Mike J completely rerouted and took his group up to Gowbarrow from where they had some fine views up the valley.

Mike and Gerry’s group went up to below Arnison Crag and descended by Glenamara Park and then went round to Glenridding Mines.

Alan W headed up past Greenside mines for Whiteside above Kepple Cove and included Glenridding Dodd on his return route.

It was a wonderful day’s walking surrounded by spectacular snow scenes.

 Sunday 31st March 2024 – Grassington

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, on to the M65, M65 eastbound to junction 7, via A6185/A678 to the A680, A671 to roundabout N of Whalley, A59 to the Skipton roundabout, B6265 to Grassington. Park in Grassington. Morning coffee stop at Darwen services, M65.

 Sunday 14th April 2024 - Langdale

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590/A591 through Windermere to Ambleside, A593 to Skelwith Bridge, B5343 to Langdale.  Park near the New Dungeon Ghyll hotel.  Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

                                      It was Kettlewell on Sunday and nearly all were off the coach and ready to walk by 10.15. And a beautiful day it turned out to be. Martin’s group left the coach at Conistone heading for a scramble up the Dib and then on to the Dales Way to join Bycliffe ‘Road’. They crossed Grassington Moor to the disused mine workings, along Dukes New Road to Hebden Beck and finally the Dales Way back to Linton Falls and Grassington. The target for Mike J’s group was Conistone Pie, a conspicuous rock formation with great views of Wharfdale and Littondale. They followed the Dales Way and Highgate Leys Lane up to the trig point on the Moor and then descended to Conistone Pie returning along Scot Gate Lane. From Kettlewell Gerry led over the bridges of that picturesque village and up the hillside to Cappelstone Gate. After lunch in the abandoned quarries they descended to the sad Mossdale Scar and down to Kelber and Bare House. Once again Gerry followed a route

SETTLE & CHRISTMAS MEAL 10th December 2023

  The weather forecast was for wind and rain – and we got both. But it didn’t stop the walks. Gerry’s group of seven left the coach at the small town of Hellifield and with his customary panache he traced a winding trail across the remote Newton and Langber Moors following fast flowing Becks and Gills to Scaleber Force. Always a dramatic waterfall but on this day it was spectacular. They continued over Sugar Loaf Hill to be confronted by the wonderful view of the Scar and Caves of Stockdale. At the Scaleber Falls they were joined briefly by Pat and Steph’s group who had followed a similar route from near Long Preston along Langber Lane beside the Mearbeck Plantations and down to Settle. Paul’s Group set off from Settle heading for Stockdale with the Caves in mind. They ascended High Hill and took the path along the escarpment visiting the dramatic Attermire, Victoria and Jubilee Caves. They crossed the river and returned to Settle by Stackhouse Lane.
