SETTLE & CHRISTMAS MEAL 10th December 2023

The weather forecast was for wind and rain – and we got both. But it didn’t stop the walks.

Gerry’s group of seven left the coach at the small town of Hellifield and with his customary panache he traced a winding trail across the remote Newton and Langber Moors following fast flowing Becks and Gills to Scaleber Force. Always a dramatic waterfall but on this day it was spectacular. They continued over Sugar Loaf Hill to be confronted by the wonderful view of the Scar and Caves of Stockdale.

At the Scaleber Falls they were joined briefly by Pat and Steph’s group who had followed a similar route from near Long Preston along Langber Lane beside the Mearbeck Plantations and down to Settle.

Paul’s Group set off from Settle heading for Stockdale with the Caves in mind. They ascended High Hill and took the path along the escarpment visiting the dramatic Attermire, Victoria and Jubilee Caves. They crossed the river and returned to Settle by Stackhouse Lane.

Stuart and Ele set off to follow the River Ribble to Stainforth and include some of the remarkable features of this beautiful area – Stainforth Force, the Packhorse Bridge, and then the Winskill Stones on Attermire Scar - and of course ‘The Craven Heifer Inn’. They completed their circuit over Sugar Loaf Hill.

Anne, Helen and Graham followed the Ribble Way to the Weir and beyond and returned by Mitchell Lane.

The Oldhams had presented a frightening 15 mile route starting at Hyndburn Bridge near Clayton-le-Moors and crossing to Dean Clough Reservoir, Whalley, Wiswell and finally Pendleton and Worston. Understandably, on account of the weather not all of the planned refreshment stops en route were too hospitable,,but they were warmly welcomed at the Calf’s Head before the rest of the groups arrived from Settle.

We were all welcomed by the Staff at the Calf’s Head and once drinks had been sorted at the tables, we enjoyed a generous traditional Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings. A very agreeable Club occasion. Thanks to all involved.
