SHAP 15th OCTOBER 2023

Shap this week - and there was frost up there !   and it was beautiful sunshine all day.

As usual groups were dropped off at different stages all the way up the A6 from Kendal (which we enjoyed twice !) up to Shap village.

At Matclose just short of Borrowdale Bridge the Oldhams were the first to leave the coach. They headed up White Howe just above Bannisdale and Mosedale and then on to Harrop Pike. From there with many more peaks to cross they reached Sleddale and on to Shap. 13m

From further up the A6 John G led his group straight up Thorney Bank and over to Sleddall Hall. From there they headed further north over Gambling Crag to Seat Robert through the remote and very wet hills above the Abbey. And then over to Shap. 11m

The next three groups went south west from the A6.

Ian and Gerry led the group from Hucks Bridge to follow the Breasthigh Road to Bretherdale and up to Salterwath and Shap Hotel. They returned through Shap Granite Works and up Wickers Gill to Keld and Shap. 11miles

Pat and Steph’s group alighted at Shap Bothy and also headed for Salterwath and Shap Wells returning through the Works and up paths beside the River Lowther to Steps Hall and into Shap. 9 miles.

From Shap Summit just short of the village Stuart’s group headed south to Clovenstone Hill following the Packhorse Hill Bridleway down Greenholme with the Silver Dragon to Steps, Salterwater and a disappointing Wells Hotel. They then crossed to the Granite Works and up to Keld. 13m.

Anne and Helen followed the path past the Stone Circle to Kemp Howe and joined the Old Road to the Abbey and Keld.

Mike’s group headed straight to the Abbey and then followed the ‘Concrete Road’ south to the car park at Wet Sleddale. They tracked round the reservoir and crossed Sleddale Beck below Sleddale Hall on a dubious ‘path’ with stones designed for mountain goats with crampons on. Yet still dry shod they headed back to Shap.

A very enjoyable days walking in an area with a remote beauty and charm and history.
