PATELEY BRIDGE 16th April 2023



Unusually all the walks commenced from the same venue – Pateley Bridge. From here they spread out in different directions, with most including Brimham Rocks at some stage of the walk. 

Stuart’s group headed south via Duke’s Folly – those strange stone pillars on the hilltop -  as far as Summerbridge and Dacre Banks where they lunched at the Royal Oak. They returned to Pateley Bridge along the Nidderdale Way visiting Brimham Hall and the Rocks. 13.5 miles 

Pat and Steph led east through Blazefield and Whitehouses along the Nidderdale Way straight to the Rocks. They then turned south to Summerbridge to follow the river back to Pateley Bridge. 10 miles.

The Oldham group set off at a pace along the riverside heading for Dacre Banks. They also returned to Pateley Bridge and the Brimham Rocks using a section of the Six Dales Trail. 16 miles. 

Mike James used the Panorama Road to Blazefield and the Rocks. Then returned along the Smelt Houses path along the Nidd to Pateley Bridge. 9 miles.

Finally Gerry led his group with Martin’s local knowledge, north west along the Nidderdale Way to Ladies Rigg, through the ancient blast furnace area and up to the Gouthwaite Reservoir dam. 9 miles.

 All returned happy with their walk in a very interesting area.

 Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590/A591 to Windermere, A592 over the Kirkstone Pass to Glenridding. Park in Glenridding. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

 Sunday 14th May 2023 – Kettlewell to Grassington

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, on to the M65, M65 eastbound to junction 7, via A6185/A678 to the A680, A671 to roundabout N of Whalley, A59 to the Skipton roundabout, B6265 toThreshfield, B6160 to Kettlewell, where the coach will return on the B6160 to Grassington. Park in Grassington. Morning coffee stop at Darwen services, M65.

 Sunday 28th May 2023 – Dufton

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 38, B6260 to Appleby, minor road to Dufton. Park in Dufton. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

                                                 What a wonderful day’s walking !         What spectacular scenery and conditions !   With reports that the Kirkstone Pass was blocked by snow the route was amended so that the coach entered the valley from the Pooley Bridge end. Some groups revised their planned walks but most were just delighted to see a good depth of snow on the fells above about 1500’ and had come prepared for it, Stuart’s group was first off the coach near Pooley Bridge to commence a 12 mile walk along the eastern side of the Lake - through Howtown, Sandwick and Silver Bay with panoramic views of the snow on Helvellyn and its close neighbours. SETTLE & CHRISTMAS MEAL 10th December 2023

  The weather forecast was for wind and rain – and we got both. But it didn’t stop the walks. Gerry’s group of seven left the coach at the small town of Hellifield and with his customary panache he traced a winding trail across the remote Newton and Langber Moors following fast flowing Becks and Gills to Scaleber Force. Always a dramatic waterfall but on this day it was spectacular. They continued over Sugar Loaf Hill to be confronted by the wonderful view of the Scar and Caves of Stockdale. At the Scaleber Falls they were joined briefly by Pat and Steph’s group who had followed a similar route from near Long Preston along Langber Lane beside the Mearbeck Plantations and down to Settle. Paul’s Group set off from Settle heading for Stockdale with the Caves in mind. They ascended High Hill and took the path along the escarpment visiting the dramatic Attermire, Victoria and Jubilee Caves. They crossed the river and returned to Settle by Stackhouse Lane. GRASMERE 9th July 2023

                                   Grasmere Account 09.07.2023 It was a bit cloudy to start with but the forecast was good - and it turned out better than good ! The first parties left the coach at the Rugby Club. Paul’s group headed for Loughrigg Fell - with its spectacular views - then descended to the Terrace. They tracked round the very thin path above Megs Gill to ascend Swinescar, and crossed Blind Tarn Moss to Easedale and Grasmere. Ian and Gerry led their group straight up Helm Crag - getting steeper every year with John C managing the very summit of the Rock. Following the undulating ridge to Calf Crag gave them a hot long walk back down Far Easedale into Grasmere. The Oldhams – still on holiday with a reduced party - started at Kelsick (I had to look that one up! – near Skelghyll) and went up Wansfell, Baystones and the Kirkstone Struggle.
