LLANGOLLEN 8th May 2022

 

This was the first time for a long time that we have been in this beautiful area in Spring time – with flowers in bloom and wildlife evident.

There were 40 walkers on the coach and a wide range of ten walks in action.

Mike’s party left the coach at Llandegla to follow the Offa’s Dyke path across the moors to the awesome screes below Eglwyseg ridge and then on to the Castle.

Four groups started out from Ponderosa Cafe.   Paul’s, Pat’s and Stuart’s groups headed for the Llantysilio range of mountains going south to pick up the river and canal. Geoff’s group crossed the valley to follow the Offa’s Dyke path and work their way to the Viaduct.

The Oldham’s and John’s group set off to explore the Vivod mountain range south of Llangollen.

Anne and Helen’s group followed the Clwydian Way south of Llangollen to the ancient Dibryn Hall and then on to the Canal.

Finally Mike J’s party headed for the Panorama Walk and the path to cross the spectacular Pont Cysyllte. On their return along the canal path they were happily accompanied by a welcome solo walker – Marcia.

Even In Llangollen itself there was entertainment in the river next the chosen pub in Llangollen.

It was a very successful day.

Next Walks 

We have changed the destination for Sunday 22nd May, as the Keswick Mountain Festival which runs until that day would be very likely to have caused us problems on the return journey from Keswick. So the coach will now be going to Ilkley instead. Attached are the amended coach routes.

Sunday 22nd May 2022 – Ilkley

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, on to the M65, M65 eastbound to junction 6 or 7, on to the A59, A59 past Skipton, A65 to Ilkley. Park in Ilkley. Morning coffee stop at Darwen services, M65.

Sunday 5th June 2022 - Hawkshead

5.30 p.m. departure

Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 36, A590/A591 to Ambleside, A593 to Clappersgate, B5286 to Hawkshead. Park in Hawkshead. Morning coffee stop at Burton services.

Sunday 19th June 2022 – Shap to Pooley Bridge

5.30 p.m. departure

 Northbound to Preston, M6 north to junction 39, A6 north through Shap to Eamont Bridge, B5320 through Yanwath to Pooley Bridge. Park in Pooley Bridge. Morning coffee stop at Tebay services. Return via the same route.

                                                 What a wonderful day’s walking !         What spectacular scenery and conditions !   With reports that the Kirkstone Pass was blocked by snow the route was amended so that the coach entered the valley from the Pooley Bridge end. Some groups revised their planned walks but most were just delighted to see a good depth of snow on the fells above about 1500’ and had come prepared for it, Stuart’s group was first off the coach near Pooley Bridge to commence a 12 mile walk along the eastern side of the Lake - through Howtown, Sandwick and Silver Bay with panoramic views of the snow on Helvellyn and its close neighbours. BARBON to SEDBERGH 7th July 2024

  There were four walks available this week, and three private. In fact, five of the groups followed very similar routes – but at different speeds, obviously ! Starting from Barden Park - Paul’s, Geoff’s and Stuart’s groups headed for Castle Knott and the Calf Top ridge. Following the ridge north, they turned at Combe Scar to descend by Long Bank and Brown Knott to the valley. Here they picked up the Dales Way and Pennine Journey path to Sedbergh. Approximately 12 miles.  And then the rain really started ! Meanwhile the Oldham Group had travelled south east from Barbon to cross to the Marble Steps Pot area and ascend Grargarath Fell. They followed this ridge to Great Coum and down to Dent and back to Sedbergh - demanding 17.5 miles. Two groups stared from Sedbergh itself. Broughton in Furness 23rd June 2024

                                             It is not the most popular part of the Lakes District but it is exceptionally beautiful with winding lanes, paths and spectacular views. On the one side we can the sea and on the other the glorious mountains. The Oldhams were the first off the coach as early as Penny Bridge to commence a fearsome 17.5 mile trek south down the Ulverston Penninsula, to cross to Askham in Furness and then turn for Broughton. However they failed to achieve their target – they only did 17 miles! Gawthwaite was the next stop where most of the walkers left the coach. Two groups – Steph’s and Stuart’s headed south while the others – John’s, Mike J’s and Mike B’s headed north. Stuart aimed for Gunson Height ridge and followed it down to Bank House Moor.
