THRELKELD 2nd March 2025
Close
roadside parking from Ambleside to St John’s suggested there would be plenty of
walkers on the popular fells – less so on Armboth and Bleaberry Fells.
Stuart and
John were the first off the coach at Wythburn to follow the range on the west
side of Thirlmere. Here they found sections ‘extremely boggy’. High Tove to
High Street had good solid pavers but Bleaberry Fell was very wet. But they
still managed to do 13.5 miles and 2700’.
There was a
mass exodus at the Swirls lay-by. Mike J led his group along the eastern side
of the A591 to Stanah and Wren Crag and then crossed to ascend High Rigg. From
there they crossed to the Old Railway path and into Threlkeld. 8 miles and
1300’.
Martin also
took his group north but along the western edge of Thirlmere to the Dam and
then crossed to High Rigg. The undulating ridge took them to St Johns and then
across the Keswick railway line. 8 miles 1300
Geoff’s
group headed for the heights of Raven Crag and Castle Crag and then crossed
High Rigg to head for Threlkeld. 11m and 2100’
Pat’s group
used a similar route beside the Reservoir and the crossed to follow St John’s
Beck. It was not straight forward because of extensive flooding from the river
and they had to find alternative tracks. 1000’ and 8 miles.
Very shortly
afterwards at Thirlspot the Oldhams left the coach and set off for Helvellyn to
commence the full ridge walk of all the Dodds to Clough Head and then descend by
White Pike and the Old Coach Road to Threlkeld. 12 miles 4200’
Alan, Edwina
and Steve had stayed on the coach till Threlkeld.
Edwina
followed the disused railway line towards Keswick and returned the same way. It
was a very popular route on the day.
Alan
ascended Blencathra for the 94th time and is set on making it a
century !
(This is due
to his high-altitude training trips - but it’s still a lot of ascents!)
And finally
Steve’s photographs suggest he was up there too and included Bannerdale in his
round. 11m 2,800’
A visit to
the Salutation rounded off a very enjoyable day’s walking followed by a
comfortable return home.
