GRASMERE 16th February 2025

After a week of varying forecasts the day turned out to be very acceptable – no rain and still a bit of snow and ice on the very tops.

The first groups left the coach at Ambleside with Stuart setting off on a solo trek round one of his favourite areas – Tarn Hows and Hodge Close and Elterwater returning over Red Bank to Grasmere. 15m

Also from Ambleside Martin led his group over Miller Brow to Loughrigg Tarn then round the Terrace to the Caves. Leaving the caves they crossed the Beck at Rydal to follow the Coffin Route back to Grasmere. A route many others used during the day!

Pat and Steph followed the old road to Rydal Mount and then the Corpse Road to Grasmere. On the day a popular route.

The rest of the groups started from Grasmere.

The Oldhams headed for Mill Bridge to commence the Steel Fell – High Raise - Sergeant Man - Tarn Crags circuit of five Wainwrights. It was very cold on the tops with plenty of ice. 12.5

Geoff’s group set off up Easedale past the Tarn and heading for Gibson Knott. They then followed the ridge round to Calf Crag and back along to Helm Crag. 11m

Ian had two Tarns in his sights as his group set off for Alcock Tarn first and then Loughrigg Tarn. They crossed the valley and returned to Grassington via the very busy Loughrigg Terrace.  10m

Mike J did a solo walk up to the Loughrigg Terrace, visited the Caves crossed the Fell, dropped into Martin’s group lunching at High Close and back down to Grasmere. 8m

Alan and Edwina followed this popular Coffin Route to Rydal and returned through the crowds on the Terrace to Red Bank and down to Grasmere

Simon and Trish headed for Steel Fell, met and walked briefly with Jenny and Suzy and then and continued their circuit down Easedale by the Stythwaite Steps. 9m

Finally Steve J also headed up to Far Easedale, turning for Calf Crag and Steel Fell and returning by Cotra Breast to Ghyll Foot and Low Mill Bridge. 9+m

Grasmere was a very busy Half Tern place but by 5.00 pm it had quietened down, back to its quiet, peaceful tranquillity.

Thank you to all the photographers for their many contributions this week....
