KESWICK 13th October 2024
This was certainly a walk to remember - it started at 8.30 am instead of 7.30 am. The driver made a mistake and we were an hour behind for the rest of the day! The air conditioning in the coach was faulty – freezing going out and boiling coming back – and we still had a good day’s walking! And with an additional half hour’s walking, most groups continued with their planned routes.
Three groups
left the coach at Wythburn heading in a similar direction. Ian and Stuart’s
groups crossed the Central Fells by the Harrop Tarn and Blea Tarn paths and
dropped down into Borrowdale by Watendlath and Ashness Bridge. Just as Stuart’s
group reached the shore of Derwentwater – there was the Launch! Just too good
to miss. Both groups did 11.0 miles and
over 2000’
The Oldhams
followed down the full length of the Central Fells ridge from Greenup Edge,
over the Saddles and Grange Fell all the way up to Shepherds Crag and Keswick. 15 miles and 3000’
From Bridge
End further down the valley, Paul’s group headed north east along the Dodds
ridge to descend Wanthwaite Bank into St John in the Vale. Then over to
Castlerigg Farm and so to Keswick. 11 miles and 3100’
From the
same place Pat and Steph walked through Shouthwaite Farm and over to Castlerigg
Circle and Farm and on to Spring Wood. 8m and 600’
Alan also started
at Bridge End Farm and went up on to High Rigg, descended to
St John's Church then on to Nest Brow, catching up with Pat and Steph's group
at Castlerigg Stone Circle, then back into Keswick via Castlerigg and Springs
Wood. 8m and 1500’
Just further along the A591 at Snipes How, John and
Debbie set off to walk round the base of Dodd Crag, ascend Bleabery Fell and Walla
Crag and then down into Keswick. 8m and 1800’
The rest of the groups started from Keswick..
Geoff and Mike set off up Millbeck heading for
Skiddaw, then out to Bakestall, back to Skiddaw! And then down by Little Man
and Jenkin Hill. 13m and 4,000’
From Ashness Bridge Pete roamed over High Seat
and Bleaberry Fell, Walla Crag and back to Keswick. 9 miles and 2000’.
Mike and Gerry’s group walked round through
Portinscale to climb Cat Bells, and along with everyone else in Keswick - they
all got to the top - except the two
leaders! 9m 1500’
And finally Anne, Helen and Graham followed ‘a
myriad of forest paths from Friar’s Crag to Keswick’.
In Keswick members celebrated a splendid day’s
walking in spite of the unfortunate start to the day.
Thank you for the variety of beautiful photos...Alan,
Anne, Chris, David, Dawn, Eric, Geoff, Howie, Ian, Jason, Mike B, Mike K, Pam, Stuart.
