POOLEY BRIDGE TO SHAP 24th May 2024
Members knew that Pooley Bridge would be busy - and so it was. But we were not staying there – we were all heading south – to Shap.
The Oldhams
were on a tight schedule to get their 18 mile route over the smaller peaks
beside Haweswater before turning for Shap. They sped over Helton and across to Hugh’s
Laithes Pike, and Wallow Crag and turned for Rosgill Moor and Shap Abbey.
Three other
groups also started from the village - Stuart’s, Martin’s and Mike J’s . They followed
the straight forward route over Askham Fell to trace the River Lowther down to
Whale, Knipe Hall, over the Suspension Bridge, along to Grange and Rosgill and
finally the Abbey.
Meanwhile
the coach was returning to Shap, dropping off the final three groups.
Mike’s group
left at Lowther Hall and Castle to explore the extensive grounds and parkland and
to join the general trail at Bampton.
Starting
from Shapbeck Gate, Alan and Edwina crossed Knipe Scar Common and joined the route at Bampton.
From the
same drop off point Pat and Steph’s group followed a similar route across the Common
to Grange and then headed for the Abbey.
We did get
wet, but not quite as wet as we had expected!
And the
Landlord of the Crown must been very pleased with his 95% attendance.
Mike
