MUNGRISDALE to THRELKELD 12th May 2024

We held our breath on Saturday – would the beautiful weather last the weekend?     And it did – just !

At Mungrisdale there was a mass exodus as parties left the coach. And at very different speeds four groups followed the path alongside the River Glenderaterra to leave it at different places.

Mike J led his group up White Horse Bent on to Mungrisdale Common and over to the Cloven Stone returning to Threlkeld on the Cumbria Way round the  edge of Blease Fell.

Paul led his group up by a similar route to Mungrisedale Common and then headed up Blue Screes to Atkinson Pike and so on to the top of Blencathra.

At a more sedate pace Mike and Gerry’s group followed the river to Mousthwaite and then up Souter Fell. They returned from Scales where they had enjoyed a pint served by the grand-daughter of a former colleague of Gerry’s ! And then across the fields beside the Glenderamackin to Threlkeld.

The Oldham Group went north up Mosedale  heading for West Fell and High Pike – the highest north eastern peak. From there they headed south to the Cumbria Way at Skiddaw House and back to Threlkeld.

Stuart led his group up to Bowscale Tarn along Bannerdale Crags and across to Mungrisdale Common and the Cloven Stone. They returned by the delightful Sinen Gill down to the Blencathra footpath.

Steve J also followed the Glenderamackin up to the east ridge of Bannerdale Crags and over to Blencathra summit. He returned by the Clove Stone and down the Glenderaterra Beck to Threlkeld.

Pat and Steph’s target was a route from Derwentfolds round the back of Latrigg to Keswick and returning along the very attractive Railway Path,

Helen and Graham had planned a route to Keswick but were distracted by the maze of beautiful lanes below Low Rigg.

Simon added his own summary of the day:

Glowering weather and a touching tribute in Threlkeld church.

A hot start up an almost deserted Souther Fell.  A drop down before the trudge up Scales Fell to a crowded Blencathra and another deserted Blease Fell.  Glowering clouds foretold a downpour, but not for us until we got home.

A look round Threlkeld church and in pub at 3pm.

A great day.

Thank you Simon
