LANGDALE 14th April 2024

A return to Langdale and there was a fine range of ten groups on the Fells – some braving the summits and some kept in the valleys but all enjoying the typical ‘Lake District weather’.

John G sent a delightful account of his walk and with his permission I attach his walk account

Only had the one taker (Bill) for my climb up to Loft Crag & Pike o'Stickle. Because of the blowy conditions we opted out of the detour to view Gimmer Crag and the rest of the walk went as planned and it was I thought a very rewarding day.

Top of Pike o'Stickle, which we reached by a short scramble, provided grand scenery. We had plenty of time for the descent and with the route over Martcrag Moor now much improved we were soon at the top of Stake Pass where we bumped into Geoff & Mike's group.

On the zigzags down into Mickleden we stopped awhile to watch a pair of sheepdogs rounding up a flock of maybe 150 Herdwicks and moving them to higher pasture.

Sheepdog Meg was clearly having a bit of an off day and the farmer was bellowing across the valley using some very choice Anglo Saxon language.

Pat Guy sent an equally charming account of Steph’s walk and I attach this too.

Steph and Pat's group of 5 had an early start alighting from the coach at Skelwith Bridge and the first point of interest was the raging Skelwith Force. Has it rained recently? There was a tremendous amount of water in the Falls.

Then it was along the tarn to Elterwater. Now gentlemen, if you are passing this way I must warn you that the Gents toilets readily take your money from you but don't let you in.

Then it was up and over the stony path to Little Langdale where lunch was taken overlooking Slater Bridge, we then had 1 of 3 bridge photographs taken during the walk on the bridge.

Then we walked along the valley to Bridge End and on to Blea Tarn to get what is probably the best view of the Langdale Pikes. After walking along the tarn we made our way to Great Langdale walking through the campsite to NDG where we enjoyed ample refreshments.

A really good day.

Thank you Pat and John     -     I’ll not guild the lily.

As always - thank you to the photographers for the great collection of photos:
