MUNGRISDALE to KESWICK 3rd September 2023
Sunday’s fell walking trip – Mungrisdale to Keswick - is one of those days to remember – glorious sunshine all day – not a cloud in the sky and picture postcard views.
Pat and Steph’s group were first off the coach at Walt Bridge to tackle an ambitious walk to Keswick. They encountered fields of long grass, ill defined paths and generally a taxing 10 mile trek. They were glad to get to Keswick.
After a textbook three point coach turn by Mark at Mungrisdale, the groups left to follow somewhat similar mountain routes to Keswick.
The Oldhams headed for Bowscale Tarn and Fell, Bannerdale Crags, Blencathra and finally Latrigg and Briar Rigg. 13m
Mike J’s followed the river Glenderamackin to Scales Tarn and ascended Blencathra. They then descended by the steep Knowe Crags to Derwent Folds.
Paul’s group headed for Blencathra by Scales Fell and descended to the Blencathra Centre and through Brundholme Woods to Keswick.
Stuart led his group up the steep south side of the Tongue and on to Bannerdale Crags. They crossed to Blencathra summit by Foul Crag, Blue Screes and Atkinson Pike. Then they descended to the Blencathra Centre by Blease Fell to follow the Railway Path into Keswick.
Anne, Helen and Graham left the coach just before Keswick to explore the Threlkeld Keswick Railway Track.
Mike’s party headed for Bleaberry and Ashness Fells. From a safe distance from the summit the leader and his deputy supervised the final ascent, and then the whole party descended to the popular Ashness Bridge to follow the Lakeside path back to Keswick.
Alan and Edwina tackled the same summit but ascended from Calf Close Bay and Walla Crag to return by Rakefoot and Springs Wood.
From Mungrisdale Steve J headed up the east ridge of Bannerdale, crossed the Glenderamakin Col to explore the Common, check on the Cloven stone and return by the Cumbria Way.
It was a day to remember.
