SEDBERGH 11th Nov 2019

Can you see the ten walkers going up the path beside Cautley Gill?  (Geoff's photo)
In sad contrast to the desperate flooding elsewhere, the Fell Walkers enjoyed an idyllic autumn day’s walking. There were eight groups out on the fells.

The Oldhams left the coach just beyond Kirby Lonsdale to access the Brownthwaite - Barbon – Middleton fells. The ‘promise’ of just 15 miles was later 'reduced' to 17?
Stuart and Mike’s groups headed for Barbon Park. Stuart started up Devil’s Crag, crossed Calf Top and descended by Long Bank and Holme Fell. Over the whole day they saw one man and his dog, and two deer.

From Barbondale Wood, Mike’s group commenced a meandering trail of paths and lanes below Middleton Fell, with diversions to see the Roman Milestone and follow the Roman Road beside the Lune, and ending up on Holme Fell.

The five remaining groups left the coach Sedbergh. Paul C led his group north-west up How Gill Lane to follow the winding route over Swarth Greaves and Bram Rigg to The Calf. With time to spare on their way back they included Winder in their list.

John G led his group up Settlebeck Gill and Arant Haw, heading for the grandly called Great and Little Dummacks. They then descended by Fawcette Bank Rigg and the very SteepCock Brow.

Geoff took his group over Arant Haw to check the Cautley Spout. After all the rain it was a spectacular display. They then followed the River Rawthey and Pennine Journey down to Sedbergh.

Anne and Helen followed the Dales Way and the River Dee towards Dent returning via Catholes.

Marcia’s group started straight up Winder with the assurance that afterwards it would be flat and probably and muddy. It was, but the highlights of their walk were the recently restored Lune Valley Viaducts - striking monuments of the railway architecture of the day.

At 11.00am parties stood in the silence of reverent remembrance.
All groups returned to Sedbergh very pleased with a most enjoyable day’s walking.
